I would also consider the material you are covering as well and find inspiration from similar sources. Since I wanted to do something educational, I was inspired by the simple & clean designs of characters from "Numberblocks". So I focused much more on the eyes and range of simple expressions I wanted as well as a small addition that reflects my natural personality in a subtle way (Ahoge). Regardless of what you decide to do, a big part is just trying. So make some doodles or art collages and see what you think fits.
