Have you (or any snacker) watched Grimgar: Of Fantasy and Ash? I thought that show was super underrated. One of the only isekai shows where the main character isn't some obvious OP self-insert messiah or playboy. Anway, I don't mind Isekai as a whole, but it's also because I just like the fantasy stuff, more so than relating in any way to the retarded self insert characters. I don't even really make internal distinctions between stuff like Demon King Misfit (if you know that) or Isekai, they are the same category for me, with few exceptions, because usually the actual isekai part of it is almost completely ignoreable without the story changing lmao. It's really just become the sloppiest, laziest excuse for a set up that circumvents any sort of familiarizing with the worlds or characters, by going "(YOU), yes (YOU), random loser male of unspecified age, are transported to this epic fantasy world! I think people just fantasize about starting life with a truly clean slate. I know Filian likes that about SAO. Like you said it's pretty lazy, though. I actually like stories where the MC is super powerful but it's because he was like that from the beginning. A weird example is Katanagatari (one of my favorites) where the MC is just giga powerful because he grew up into adulthood being trained by his dad who specifically developed a martial art that was a perfect counter to everyone that uses a sword. It sounds dumb and like a One Punch Man situation where he'd be too OP but it still makes it more enjoyable than someone going from zero to hero because they "solo leveled" enough.

That is the functional part of isekai. It's a crutch for writers to do a couple of things.
First of all it allows the protagonist to be ignorant of the world they're in so less effort needs to be put into showing the setting and setting it up in an organic way. They can simply have the protagonist ask a question and then exposition will do all of the heavy narrative lifting.
Secondly it allows the protagonist to possess otherworldly knowledge without needing to explain how they would know that. It's because they're from Earth so obviously they know X or Y. This allows writers to easily write themselves out of a stupid corner they've painted themselves into.
Thirdly it's easier for readers to self-insert into. This means little to no effort needs to be spent actually developing the personality of the protagonist.

In summary: The protagonist can be written to simultaneously stupid as shit and also deus ex machina competent and not violate the isekai setting. It's effortless to write a story like this when the rules are so forgiving.
