You need to learn grammar.
>verbs of existence
Imasu, desu, arimasu- these are key to learning any language even besides japanese.
>godan and ichidan verbs
And mastering the SOV word order, which is reversed compared to the English SVO word order will allow you to understand sentences more easily. Once you have a grasp of grammar you can flesh it out with vocabularies.

watashi means "i"
kimi means "you"
and so on, it's an easy language

more seriously, my tip if you want to learn japanese to enjoy hololive or anime in general is to focus on vocabulary and only start prioritizing grammar once you understand most words you hear on the streams. most books for beginners put too much emphasis on formal speech and grammatical structures that you will never hear from talents, and the grammar of the informal japanese that they use is rather loose

tl;dr vocabulary and vibes, not grammar

4 years for me, anki included
>>
>>108268715
I've been doing reps with Anki, 20-30 minutes every day, mostly focused on kanjis, phrases and radicals since two years ago.
I think I'm starting to understand things now, more than ever.
there are better ways to do your reps, though, I'm just lazy.

You don't need to understand japanese to watch JPchuubas, just listem to them and smile
>>
>>108268715
It's an extremely easy language to learn to listen to. You'll be better at it within a few months than you will after years of trying to understand what the fuck the French are saying.

Different strokes for different folks anon. I got a grasp of how Japanese works by shuffling english sentences to fit into Japanese structure, turning them into some shakespeare gobbledygook.

pick a slow talking vtuber like okayu and translate every word with jisho
it's not rocket science

Go watch asacoco.
You can learn Japanese when she's talking in a Georgian accent while imitating Mickex Mouse.
