Can a Vtuber be TOO in character to the point it comes off as fake, annoying or cheesy?
>>
>>108392998
yes
>>
>>108392998
On their own? No, they just need an audience looking for hard keyfabe.
In collabs? Yes, if matched with someone that isn't as hard on kayfabe as them the clash can make it too cringe or weird to be enjoyable (very cringe collabs can still work, but only sometimes)

Verily, whence a mortal dons the drab too forthcomingly, it has been told that that cringe doth strikes trueheartedly. But is that sincerity not also a sweetness that graces the heart like honey the tongue? Huzzah!
>>
>>108392998
yes but depends on the character
>>
>>108392998
bau bau
>>
pretty much any vtuber who does a character is more annoying and less entertaining than if they weren't
>>
>>108394016
yes. go look at indie loli vtubers and they become obnoxious really fast
>>
>>108392998
Yes.
Mori in particular was horrendous early on because she kept overacting.
>>
>in character
>fake
?
>>
it's cool the /vt/ is attacking vtubers for trying lmao
>>
>>108392998
I think every girl in Holo En fake laughs except for Nerissa.
She is the real one.
Also ERB is so weird, she clearly creates a GFE enviroment with the most cringe "I love you" parasocial pandering, and then gets upset when her fans get angry with her for collabing with men. You can't have both ffs.
>>
>>108394471
There needs to be balance, you can play a character but still feel like a genuine person.
>>
>>108394690
We've heard all their real laughs when something too funny happens and they can't control it.

>>
>>108392998
Yeah, just look at FWMC
>>
>>108395257
It was meant as a counterexample, but I realize now I wasn't adequately clear.
>>
>>108392998
No
>>
>>108394460
She still does it, I honestly can't stand watching her
>>
Yes, but that's good actually. The smaller and more specific the niche, the more satisfying it is to follow them if it suits your taste, and you just hard filter the other ones. No half assing it though.
>>
>>108393959
when something makes her laugh so much that it finally slips though, thats kino
>>
>>108392998
So the thing with ERB is that it's completely earnest.
>>
>>108396754
Yep she’s genuinely a cringe theater kid renfaire aunty
>>
>>108396754
Doesn't make it any better.
>>
You gotta be like Weird Al were you're a character of you but you're still you in a way and it not totally fake.
>>
Does ERB play D&D?
>>
>>108394460
Holy shit, this. If she wasn't the first vtuber I was exposed to, I might have started watching vtubers earlier. But she is unbelievably cringe.
>>
>>108399544
A little, not as much as you might expect.
>>
>>108392998
I don't think that you can overdose kayfabe.
I do believe that some girls are straight up shit at acting. Sometimes you get Hyakumantenbara Salome and sometimes you get early Mori Calliope. It's a part of the base skillset
>>
>>108392998
I feel this way about Shylily and Silvervale.
>>
>>108394690
To be fair to ERB she pulled that bandaid off day one, anyone who expects her not to homocollab is genuinely retarded.
>>
>>108394690
plot twist she loves me and da bois
>>
>>108394690
>he never felt motherly / auntie love
>>
>>108394690
>I think every girl in Holo En fake laughs except for Nerissa
You're wrong
>>
>>108399670
It's what happens when you just watch bad CW dramas and dubbed anime, they don't know good acting.
>>
>''Best singer in Hololive''
>Tries too hard to make her voice deep and really forces her vocals.
>>
>>108400748
>he doesn't know what a great perfomer is
>>
>>108400859
A good performer can sing without it sounding like you're forcing it and you just sound naturally doing it like Tracey Thorn one of my favorite female vocalists.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih7GCa3Hpww
>>
>>108400949
The problem is that you think "she's forcing it", while it's the most retarded thing you can even say.
LIke you're singing, of course you have to put on some vocals to reach the notes you need, especially if you're having fun.
Also you are not even considering the differences of power you need or you want to express in specific genre of music. Like the one you posted she's not "forcing too much" because the music is supposed to have chill vibes.
>>
>>108401016
She still over does it anon, it doesn't sound natural when she sings like you can have a powerful voice and still sound natural look at Mariah Carey or a lot of popular artists.
https://youtu.be/qq09UkPRdFY?si=d3OzIfNbHEiOBnOi&t=65
>>
>>108401068
>it doesn't sound natural
Who cares?
What's important is being able to reach notes and give the right amount of power to convey the emotions you want to give to the song. Or in Karaoke, just to have fun.

All you're saying is just subjective statements without any proof, just biased by posting official songs made with multiple takes and correct mixing to sound the way they wanted perfectly. What you think it sounds "natural", may just be something you prefer.

If there is really something to say about being "natural" or not (i'm talking about hypothetically, if you would be right about calling her "forced"), then we can talk about shits like "natural talent" and "trained talent". And in this case ERB being the "forced one" is the skilled one, which is something positive. If she can do that, by putting a voice and using skills rather than sounding "natural", then that's something pretty positive.
Something indeed a "great perfomer" would do, to make up a show for her viewers.

In any way your statement is retarded, however you want to put it.
>>
>>108394460
That hasn't changed at all, her dmc cutscene reactions are like nails on a chalkboard.
She still to this day does the Massive fan plays X for the first time" for everything she becomes obsessed with for several weeks.
40k was another example of this
>>
>>108392998
No
>>
>>108401203
Least glazing Liz fan.
>>
>>108394722
My oshi has the perfect balance and it's kino
>>
>>108392998
Yes, obviously.
But what I find worse is vtubers attempting to force fake personality traits, a "thing that they're known to do". Kronii's "GWAK", for example.
>>
>>108405785
kanatan got done dirty
>>
>>108392998
No, /vt/ just never liked keyfabe in the first place and always simply wanted to watch western women with anime avatar talking about their real lives. It's okay to admit it.
>>
Kayfabe is for music videos and other non-streamed content.
>>
>>108406637
Pakatube is actually what ideal vtubing looks like.

What exactly made/makes Mori cringe? Sincere question I’m like fuckin’ autistic and shit and I like Mori, but I’m curious.
>>
>>108407090
The only time I like her is when she's laughing or crying because only then I know she's being genuine.
>>
>>108407090
I like Mori a lot now, but she acted very stiff and cold years ago. You could tell that she was embarrassed to play the character.
Some people said it was because she hated anime, but I think she was just a newbie streamer. She got better after collabing with a lot of of the good streamers in Holo.
>>
>>108396754
She's genuinely an autistic dork.
>>
>>108401938
She's that great to be fair. Anything that says ERB can't sing or a bad performer is genuinely retarded.
>>
>>108408649
She's bad.

I'm >>108394460 and I don't have anything against Mori and haven't watched her in the past few years, but early on she and Kiara were way, WAY into the kayfabe part and had no idea how to balance it in a way that didn't sound like a theater kid trying to do his first Shakespeare play. Everything they talked about had some kind of lore spin and it just ended up sounding cringe and extremely difficult to follow if you didn't already know what she was talking about from RM shit.

A standout to me was scythe swinging lessons. It was such an unnatural and pedantic way to describe a vague activity she was doing behind the scenes (which she'd later just admit was english tutoring), and since she always tried to talk about it using kayfabe terms like a child swinging their scythe wrong, her stories just became more confusing and difficult to follow. Takamori was another example of something being horribly forced by both sides (Mori was just as committed to the bit as Kiara was in her own way) and just felt completely offputting.

From what I've seen of her nowadays though, all that bugs me now is her tone during collabs. She always sounds like she's talking to children no matter who she's with and it never feels natural. Still massively respect her as a person both for her work ethic and her character behind the scenes (dropping that one dude who tried to cancel FWMC for their jingle contest will always be based) but I can't watch her content.
>>
>>108411123
I'm actually pretty sure that the soft Mori is closer to her actual self. Remember that Karen was massive poser and only acted like a cool bitch because that was cool to her. Even in her "cold Calli arc" the softer side was emerging every time she interacted with a weaker (personality wise) holo, mainly Gura. After interacting more with JPs and getting cats, she finally relaxed. The thing is, when she's in "idol mode" she (possibly unaware) acts like her jp colleagues more.

I might be armchair-psychologist'ing It tho
>>
>Looks into ERB because I know next to nothing about her.
Damn she's fat.
>>
>>108401938
>Mori glazes her
>Kiara glazes her
>FUWAMOCO glazes her

Everyone is wrong you're right.

Haachama
>>
>>108392998
If that's possible, then the dogs would be there first. ERB's overdone British accent is actually kind of fun.
>>108393959
For some reason, does not apply to Luna.
>>
>>108411123
>had no idea how to balance it in a way that didn't sound like a theater kid trying to do his first Shakespeare play.
That's BloodRaven right now except they and shippers are literally quoting and acting like this is Romo and Julliet, but it's so much worse

Mori acted like she was above everything because she was trying to impress her old friends from the underground j-pop scene who hated vtubers and idol culture. When she realised they'll never ever acknowledge her achievements in Hololive she cut them off and finally learnt to *be* Mori and not just *act* like Mori.
>>
>>108406733

yes. I love fuwamoco at first but got tired of their gimmick after a real. its too much and it got stale.

it depends a lot on your tolerance and the specific character, and also your autism level to realize whether they are fully in character or just talking weird but being themselves
>>
FUWAMOCO in collabs are the worst for this. All they do is BAU BAU and try forcing everyone else to adapt to them and their annoying Teletubby kayfabe
