gundam has a lot of spin-offs but the most familiar setting is in the original Universal Century timeline that began with the original show in 1979. I watched it a long time ago, but i remember the story still being pretty decent despite its age and obvious budget issues. Gundam is interesting because there is usually an element of political intrigue involved to go along with the giant robots and stuff.Chronologically speaking, the original anime is pre-dated by a short series called The Origin that came out a few years ago. It basically follows Char Aznable growing into adulthood and leads up to the original series. Some people argue this is a better entry-point because it's visually a little more modern and appealing, although they do use CGI for the robots which is kinda meh. It also makes you a little more invested in trucking through 0079, regardless of its flaws
