They could have been the best wave in the branch's history, and they still wouldn't have done crazy numbers. They just debuted way too close to the drama surrounding Selen's termination, especially with how the company did a terrible job of addressing the situation. Their higher ups needed to have the image of the company or a mysterious EN manager as being the problem, instead of having 3 of their own talents publicly bury another, the latter really left a terrible taste in many viewers' mouth that took 1 year or more for people to move on from.
If you were to ignore Selen's drama, and lets say she was never terminated for example, they'd do better but its also difficult to see them doing better than TTT either. One thing about female corpo vtubers is that they're quickly put into a position where they're either gachikoi friendly with no little to no male collabs or they can collab with anyone. Not that there are no examples of the former in NijiEN still; Aia and Scarle are mostly solo streamers and yet they still bring in revenue for the branch even after Selen's termination, and Selen herself still collabed with tons of dudes while also maintaining a caring relationship with her fans. It's just a difficult tightrope to walk, mainly because the gachikoi friendly example is naturally the most financially viable and gets you more viewers from males viewers, so Denauth's females needed to be super entertaining or appealing to attract male viewership that either left for indies or small corpo girls.

Simultaneously being a male corpo vtuber can be a debuff in its own way, as at this point in time you're instantly viewed as a fuckboy looking for an easy lay thanks to now having influence, especially if you do ASMRs, have an ikemen model, or have a softspoken attitude that may or may not be forced. So you either go along with what female viewers expect from NijiEN's brand of male talents or you get left in the dust.

For whatever reason, sisters were harassing Ryoma about not denouncing Twisty and he told them to fuck off a while ago. I randomly saw some bait threads about it when it went on, but the threads died really quickly because it's not exactly something /vt/ gives a toss about. Apparently it got so bad that they started whining to Klara about Ryoma and even she had to tell them to fuck off (though it was more directed at bothering her about Ryoma). I think similar situations happened like two more times at various points.
