Selling photos and taking donations pays for cosplays, travel, convention badges, merch, and tickets.Some of the more big name cosplayers do OF or model work for more stable income. I don't doubt there are some people with no foresight who spend years doing this stuff without focusing on their actual jobs and end up with no nest egg too.
