Fun Crocodile Fact #27: I've talked about a few ancestors of the crocodile from the late Triassic period before, but did you know that crocs share an ancestry with another animal family? And it's not lizards I'm talking about, it's birds. Based on recorded fossil evidence and evolutionary traits such as both having a four-chambered heart, crocodiles and birds are linked to common ancestors from the Archosauria clade dated back around 250 million years ago. It bears a resemblance to the common fact that the Tyrannosaurus Rex is the common ancestor to the chicken. Only this time, they are usually linked to aquatic birds. This even includes, well, ducks.

Fun Crocodile Fact #28: Some animals like turtles lay their eggs and leave them to hatch and fend for themselves, but that doesn't apply for the crocodile! The mama croc will circulate and defend her nesting ground for weeks until they hatch. She can also choose to camouflage the nesting ground so it doesn't attract any unwanted attention. Even as they hatch, she will still continue to protect them from predators for a few weeks until they can surely protect themselves. A crocs most vulnerable time of their lives are when they're just hatchlings. As many threats such as monitor lizards, giant birds and even crabs will see them as prey while they are tiny.
