The other big issue I think "modern" I stopped at gen 7, so I might be wrong about the latest two gens Pokémon games have is that they waste your time so much. I also recently replayed Fire Red and was pleasantly surprised by how it doesn't trow at your face long, pointless dialogues and doesn't inflate a story that doesn't have the depth to support it. Also, thank god, your rival doesn't stop you every five minutes for a challenge
