Old school DND basically started out as a microcosm of a wargame and then when you got into higher levels it reverted back into it.Another thing to keep in mind with some of those older modules is they were designed with conventions in mind, where a DM would just let people walk into the game with their characters or provide some premade ones and when someone died the next person in line could step in instead as well.
