If a rat wanted to attack you and you didn't manage to kick it away in time it could get a really nasty bite in too. Or for that matter if a cat is hunting a rat and doesn't land the kill, and the rat decides to attack instead of fleeing, the rat absolutely can give the cat a bite that will likely get infected. In return the cat will likely kill and eat the rat (if it doesn't get spooked and flee). But the fact that you can kill your opponent doesn't make the wounds hurt any less if you didn't expect to be getting into a bloody fight

If you can get your hand around their neck/chest and clamp, then you can pick that cat up by the scruff of the neck with the other hand. As long as you don't pull away, your wounds will probably be minimal. If you can use something as a shield to block it, then you're golden. Honestly, though, if my cat was doing that shit to me unprovoked/I didn't want to play too much, I'd probably pick that fucker up and slam it into a wall or the floor, then get rid of it. Cats are natural teachers. They teach us about personal space, warnings, body language and never exposing your back.
