Not a single example posted in this thread indicates anything even close to the idea of sentience.Rudimentary mimicry and self awareness is not a sign of sentience.Sentience itself is a ridiculous term, a borderline religious level holdover from the notion that we are somehow special in the animal kingdom aside from our extremely elevated (comparatively) problemsolving ability.
>>5977430Should really give the elephant some giant Jenga blocks and see what he builds
>>5977532At that scale they're just called building materials, bro. Not jenga blocks.

Orcas are really interesting because despite being clever predators who hunt pretty much anything in the water, there's not a single example of them being aggressive towards humans. Kinda crazy if you think about it. They even attack moose swimming, but never humans.
>>5977433hehehe he even went "thanks"
>>5977542Bros stressed as fuck from having to think that hard, all the time.
>>5977567Orcas are intelligent enough that they used to hunt with humans, in Australia they would corral whales towards sailors and then split the carcass in half. Also they can intentionally beach themselves to catch seals on the shore but it's something they have to be taught and will practice on an empty beach, some juveniles don't attempt it again after failing the first time so maybe it's a sign that they're overcoming a primal fear of begin out of the water when they're doing it which would demonstrate the intelligence require to overcome instincts.

>>5977530Sentience is simply the intelligence threshold where one becomes not only self-aware but able to act in a self-conscious manner. The closest example of sentience in this thread is the magpie spotting the yellow mark on it in the mirror and attempting to remove it. That shows not only immediate self-awareness by recognizing itself in the mirror, but a past awareness as well. It knows what it's supposed to look like and recognizes the yellow mark as not being there before, and thus tries to remove it. That shows memory along with some level of self-concscious thought.
>>5977567>there's not a single example of them being aggressive towards humans.False.

>>5977530Lol, you're a psychopath.
>>5977894Why do you think that? And why was your go to argument an attempt at a personal attack?

>>5977889that is fucking genius mate, straight up. figure we can put all that on the blockchain as well, hook it up to web 4.0 and we're buzzin.
>>5977899Thanks for that non squiteur but it is irrelevant to the arguments I made. That is unless your argument is literally "Dude, I just FEEL like they're sentient, okay?!" in which case, lol and lmao even.

>>5977427I know it'll never happen because it's le immoral or some shit, but couldn't we just selectively breed them until they're able to make the sounds accurately? I guess it wouldn't do much anyway since parrots can imitate shit but they can't understand language
>>5977903The behaviors demonstrated here are in fact demonstrations of sentience: they demonstrate that the animals can feel. They don't sapience (that is, smart enough to be considered a person). I wish people would learn what those words actually mean. >>5977907Some can. Or more accurately some can learn meanings of enough words to get an understanding of meaning through language, if an incomplete one. This >>5977509 parrot is the strongest example of that.

>>5977530oxford dictionary of english says that "sentience" is the ability to see and feel through your sensespracticaly any living thing is sentient because they react to the enviromment. a tree will produce a bitter substance in their leaves once a caterpillar tries to eat from it as an example, proving that a tree can use it's senses

>its 2025 and people are still getting got by demonstrations of "animal intelligence"this is why we can't have nice things
>>5977918Thanks, but this discussion was already resolved.
>>5977530Setience as in able to experience your surroundings yes, all animals are capable.Sapience, as in able to think and use reason, some animals are capable of doing it but none of them compares to humans.
>>5977838Yes, they are defending Europe from "refugees" by there are still no examples of wild orcas attacking humans. Even those just sink rafts, but never actually attacked anyone.

>>5977889Animals dont think in words and mostly process the world through sense. High functioning animals like birds, pigs, whales, elephants, dogs, ect. Have the brain function to process basic emotions and learn vocal commands because they usually live in packs. Also, why its harder (but still possible) to teach commands to a cat. The animals that have more articulated verbal capacity like birds and whales can imitate human language but have no idea what theyre saying. Like parrots. Even koko who knew like 2000 words, was thought to just make doing gibberish and there was never any proof she knew what the fuck she was saying and when she did sign it was for food. Animals talking to humans sadly will never be possible mechanically unless we do some ungodly shit with genetics.
