Col Joe Cotton (one of the people in charge of teh XB-70 flight program) and NAA Test Pilot Al White were onboard. Col. Cotton had used a binder clip to short circuit the controls after they had failed to deploy. On landing the brakes were stuck and hence the fires. Apparently Col Cotton had the part of the binder clip he had used to short the panel added to his wedding ring afterward. Al White was on that very plane six months later during the midair with the F-104. Al White survived that incident, but his copilot Maj. Carl Cross and Joe Walker the F-104 pilot did not survive.t.
