I knew 2 people who were on this plane. they sat across the aisle from each other. one survived, the other died.
anytime anyone says the USA doesn't or didn't have a hypersonic manned aircraft, just show them this.

>>6021399Not sure why the filename says flight 84. This incident happened on the 37th overall flight of the program and the 14th flight for the second Valkyrie on December 3rd 1965. Col Joe Cotton (one of the people in charge of teh XB-70 flight program) and NAA Test Pilot Al White were onboard. Col. Cotton had used a binder clip to short circuit the controls after they had failed to deploy. On landing the brakes were stuck and hence the fires. Apparently Col Cotton had the part of the binder clip he had used to short the panel added to his wedding ring afterward. Al White was on that very plane six months later during the midair with the F-104. Al White survived that incident, but his copilot Maj. Carl Cross and Joe Walker the F-104 pilot did not survive.t. >>6025699Thanks for the correction. I guess folks get shot down there often.
>>6025798Yes, it was common as Gaddafi claimed the whole gulf to be Libyan territory, the US Navy would constantly probe with freedom of navigation (FON) into what was recognized by everyone but Gaddafi as international airspace to try and invoke a response. On multiple occasions as you saw it led to shoot downs.

>>6017992Could someone explain the process here? How are they picking up and dropping the trees, some sort of ground crew at the pick up point quickly throwing a loop over a releasable hook or is it so sort of drag line?Seems a bloody expensive way to harvest trees.
>>6021415>anytime anyone says the US doesn't or didn't have hypersonic manned aircraftwho is saying the US never did? the problem is they don't have them anymore, manned or unmanned, and are now desperately trying to catch back up to Russia and China.

>>6030028Is this a career-limiting incident for the pilot no matter what the inquiry finds?
>>6030094the V-22 has like a million crashes on record so they can't really blame the pilot anymore at this point
>>6029220There's a few dozen guys out in the tree farm that are cutting all the trees and bunching them together quickly while the heli is going back and forth. Theyre bunched with a cable iirc that connects to some sort of quick attach/release line controlled by the pilot. Its a very efficient, well-orchestrated operation that gets an insane amount of work done in short time. Its suprisingly not expensive because A LOT of trees get harvested super quickly- Keep in mind that MILLIONS of Christmas trees all need to be harvested and distributed within a few weeks, from farms scattered all over the place, but they fetch a huge premium price despite it costing next to nothing to grow them in huge quantities. The heli might be the most expensive part of it all but it removes the necessity to make roads, drive trucks around muddy hillsides, pay crews to drag trees through mud great distances, and saves time from having to stack the trees in the trucks manually. I dont know what the cost is for the helicopter...maybe a $1000+ an hour? But with the pace that type of harvesting accomplishes it gets hundreds of trees loaded on trucks in an hour, and those trees will get shipped to California or wherever to be sold for a $100+ a pop. Also worth mentioning- where I live in the NW some of the helis they use are visibly shitty. Theyre old jet rangers that are not something youd ever see at an airport, so its not like these operations are always using some new multi-million dollar aircraft.
>>6030129>the V-22 has like a million crashes on record21
>>6030155>helis they use are visibly shitty.they just need a wash
>>6030025I wish this had audio
>>6031277No exaggeration, but the last one I saw when driving by a tree farm looked haggard as fuck and had a primer gray rattle-can paint job. It looked like the helicopter version of those "work in progress" tuner cars you used to see all the time in the 00's that had busted ground effect kits, curb scraped rims and bubbling window tint.

>>6017890>>6020544>>6021203>>6021356Why is this so rousing and evocative? Hearing these aluminum dragons roar through the sky is so viscerally exciting. Far more so than jet aircraft, which are also enthralling but not in the caveman way of powerful prop aircraft. The absolute thundering power in defiance of nature and peace, fighting its way through gravity and air with Godlike brute force, force realized through man's mind and hand.Space Shuttle launches are the KING of this, nothing else is as stirring as that, I frequently start to tear up.
