i loved morrowind and was really hyped for oblivions release. yes it was a step down intellectually and in several other ways but it was still a nice place to go to. and like with most things sometimes one associates stuff with where you were physically and mentally at the time (e.g. on release in '06 i was a slightly depressed 20 something living alone in a little flat and drinking a bit too much so it was a nice escape).

the world was beautiful, the characters were hideous fugly monstrosities, the voice acting was charmingly hilarious, the music was good, a fair few of the questlines were good/funny, the notorious clipping issues you'd get with some cpus were absolutely crazy, the levelling system was fucking retarded, the loot was pretty shit, the oblivion gates were tedious beyond belief, the "radiant ai" was borked and funny, you didn't have to worry about cliffracers (thanks jiub) and by sithis the dark brotherhood questline deserves the praise it gets - dark, silly, a twist etc. and anything with the legendary sean bean in it has to be good, it's a law of nature.
for all it's flaws it had plenty of charm.
admittedly when i went back to it (again, unmodded vanilla naturally) a year or so ago i cheated the whole system just to play the storylines again. running around just punching stuff to death is fun.

i wouldn't touch the remake with someone else's barge-pole.

By the mid 2010s most of us started realizing that the 2000s were basically the 90s but with better technology. Rap was still a subculture, white people still owned all mega corporations, and baseball was still on top.

Now everything is rap, basketball/football, owned by indians and arabs, and the average personality of the standard white American youth is corrupted by hispanic and black ideals. Seriously. The early 2010s (like 2012 at the latest) was the last period where this wasn't a thing. It's been over 10 years that the world collapsed on itself and spat out this current reality. If the world today was still like any year between 2001-2012 it would be 10x better.
