i just set the variables up using a bash shell script so i don't have to type the entire thing every single time. the filesize is capped to 6MB using some script arithmetic but i'm on linux so it's probably of no use to everyone else

the GBA basically just has a GBC sound chip with a couple extra 8-bit PCM outputs, the shit sound is because most games use software-mixed, 8-bit, ~14kHz or so music

Castlevania music on the GBA games is so interesting to me, Circle of the moon has an amazing soundtrack that uses the GBA's audio chip marvelously but i suppose the music used to much cartridge space so the animations in the game are very rough, then Harmony of Dissonance has butter smooth animations but the music is complete ass, lower quality that even the original gameboy and for the final game, Aria of sorrow they finally managed to get a middle ground between music quality and animations

some CRPGs are really good
some VNs are really good (not vidya lel)
but a lot of games that are known by normies for good writing are just like 6/10 movie quality at best and usually ripping off stories from other mediums anyways
this becomes more and more true with newer games
I think some older games had legitimate script writers and authors working on them, people coming in from other industries, but now people explicitly write video games for a living and like all things vidya, the barrier to entry is just too low.
