If they were scaled up war elephants they'd have been more interesting, the books describe them as mobile fortresses that horses refused to go near, so it had to be Gondorian infantry that attempted to get close enough to shoot their handlers. It also doesn't make sense that Jackson made them so much bigger, but somehow still fragile enough to be hurt by shortbows and long swords when regular earth elephants generally shrug that shit off.

Aragorn murdering the Mouth of Sauron, Denethor running the full length from the tombs and the entire courtyard of the citadel somehow while being on fire, the Army of the Dead dropping the avalanche of skulls on Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli just for the lulz because one minute later they tell them they accept anyway, Legolas taking out a mumakil.

These giant titans that took like a year to get to the front line (imagine the food) kill a few hundred horsemen with the first charge then it all starts to go to shit for them.Actually re watch it. They smash through the Rohan line then... They're kind of milling around, chasing individual horses in circles, getting pelted with arrows and spears, then... They start rapidly dying. Seriously by the end of the sequence they're getting functionally no kills and every minute or so a Mumakil drops. The Rohirim made one bad snap decision play against a completely unheard of enemy, then immediately pivoted, changed strategies, and were trading absurdly favorably (one mumak killing anything less than a thousand horses is a huge fucking waste, and none of them even appeared to manage a hundred).It's literally just the scary music stings and camera angles that make it look like they're losing at the start.

I didn't read them until my 20's but I still remember the cartoon movies being cool...of course they look pretty bad now that I have something to compare it to but the nostalgia of seeing them for the first time was cool being a little kid.
