Any interesting watches or articles to read on the effects of dumbphones on kids?
Especially early on, 6 and under.

Will soon be a dad. And while I will be conservative about his access to devices, I still think it's important that it be learned, as everyday life depends on being able to speak the "language" of the current dominant technology.
By seeing pros and cons, I can think of a more solid plan.

Videos like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VkNWLYD5c4 suggest that finer motor skills get improved by phones.
The comments are a buffet of downsides. But it's just anecdotes, I want properly-structured content about the topic.

Is this good or bad I'm not sure.
On one hand learning to multitask the devices that will no doubt be important part of your life is an important skill.
On the other hand you can SEE the brain cells die when people browse that socmed shit.

He's becoming a gifted child in the field of slop consumption, literally the potential of a human life being poured into processing hours of disconnected arbitrary forgettable information
u tell me lol

Gotta admit the multitasking is impressive tho.
Two completely separated channels, the slop doesn't affect the game at all.

You're a retard for assuming that he's multitasking and not just drooling at the colors.

Look up "Media on the Brain". It taught me that the flashing colors of screens have an sub-conscious effect on the brain which makes us more frustrated/angry and lowers our attention span.

It's not impressive, the skill he is learning is not ACTUALLY useful.
He is learning how to do many things at the same time with "passable quality", whereas if you want to get anywhere in life, you must be able to focus on one thing and do it well.

I gave my grade school kids dumb phones for keeping in touch with me. Some parents buy their kids smart watches with phone + gps tracker. I avoided them because they seem like an invasion of privacy, but the kids don't seem to see it that way. So I might get those instead.

The kids also share a tablet that is stocked with apps, ebooks, videos, and music that I approved. It has no browser or internet connected apps except for f-droid. It was firewalled from the internet at one point, but I found that unnecessary as long as it had no internet connected apps.

We don't let them visit people who let their kids have unsupervised internet access. Most of their friends parents are ok but occasionally you get a boomer grandparent that doesn't know about Elsagate videos.

I think smartphones are a technological dead end so I encourage them to use PC for non trivial stuff. We have a desktop computer running Linux that the whole family shares. If the kids want to use it I log them in and help them with what they want to do.

It will probably get harder when they're teenagers, pic related

I would make a snide remark, but being ignorant of Reddit jargon is a real point in your favor and I'm a little ashamed I know what it means.

>Reddit jargon
You mean newspaper personal ad jargon. Born from every letter costing money to get printed with your ad. But it's certainly strange some place on the internet is still using it

OP genuine advice here. Im not a dad but im a tech expert, smartphones are really bad for any kid, specially unsupervised.

1) Male or female?
This changes the dynamic in the long run, males can have access sooner than girls, unless your kid shows faggot traits, in that case therapy before phone.

2) is someone going taking care of the kid?
if so, the kid has someone who pays atention to him and encourages different healthy activities, kids have energy they need to dump, so make them use that energy safely and in heatlhy activities instead of a phone.

If the kid is going to be alone, then you better give him something, no smartphones, but maybe a console without internet access.

3) They will grow and eventually you will have to give them a phone, or else they will get picked on and exiled from their peers, so give them one, and make sure you can monitor what the kid does, without telling him, you have to give him the freedom to commit mistakes.

4) Let the kid fuck it up

wattching porn or insulting noobs online? as natural as life, just dont let him get addicted and act as if you could catch him at anytome so there is some degree of caution with it.

social media? an instant red flag, monitor heavily and you better be ready to explain that the internet is dangerous and full of terrors, but dont do so without the kid fucking it up first, or they will be drawn to it.

5) Females have a wider range of danger, girls are generally less inclined to search or watch risky content and more inclined to the social aspect, which is the real danger.

It its male, you can generally let him be as long as he is not obsessed with social media.

6) Phones, internet, and tablets cannot be their fucking parents, so do your job and teach without prohibiting, they need to face consecuences, they need to experiment, that is just part of life.

In short: just be a good parent man, become their best friend instead of their parent, so trust is paramount.

I like your post, anon.
I'm one of three brothers, and none of us ever threw tantrums, despite our very different personalities, which always spoke volumes to me about how parenting is the most important thing. Can't be a coincidence.

I have no issues with filling a kid's time with interesting stuff.
I was a video-game kid, I see no harm in giving kids a huge library of problems to solve. Books, drawing, learning languages, there is so much intellectual stuff that is more stimulating than the Internet.
Only the physical, outgoing part I can't help with much, I've been an introvert hikikomori for most of my life and don't like normie shit.

The Internet, on the other hand, os quite the conundrum. I made very good usage of it and am a smarter, more prepared person because of it. But I also saw all the dark sides of it and could very well have become another victim of its perils, which makes me afraid for my children. But I never gave into it, so it cycles back to parenting. Maybe.

Fucker isn't even born yet and is already occupying so much of my time, I hope he's ready to learn 4 languages by the age of 4. That'll learn him.
