I was watching this film and in this scene - what is that in the background? Is it a mountain that was blown up to carve it out like that?

>>1541219What you see in the background is not a natural mountain blown up or carved like that, but rather a stone quarry. The vertical grooves and squared-off walls are very characteristic of quarry faces where blocks of stone have been extracted. In Italy, where Fellini filmed much of Satyricon, these kinds of landscapes were common, especially in volcanic or tuff quarries. The stepped and striated look comes from systematic cutting rather than erosion. So it isn’t a mountain naturally shaped that way, but an artificial industrial cut in the rock that Fellini incorporated into his surreal, ancient world.

>>1541223Sure. Many evidences of that in Archeology.
>>1541224Very nice, thank you
>>1541223Some marble quarries in use in Italy were also used in antiquity.
>>1541223>Could they have cut at that scale in the ancient world? Or at least in that style but not scaleThey've done episodes of Ancient Aliens on this shit, as there are plenty of occurrences of stone cutting that exceed what seems possible, even with modern technology and engineering
