Looking for a very specific archetype of character:
the only definite examples I can think of are Liet Kynes from Dune(book) and Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park(movie(the first one)).
basically a cool scientist guy who doesn't adhere to typical "scientist" character tropes and whose expertise gives them a better perspective on what's really going on than most of the other characters, especially if there's an ecological/environmentalist angle. bonus points if their wisdom not being heeded ends in tragedy.
can be from any media

Some of the most well known scientists in history aren't stereotypical at all, and a lot of them fit your description.

Mendel was an Austrian monk, whose experiments breeding pea plants in the monastery garden led to breakthroughs.
Alexander Graham Bell was the first inventor to patent a working telephone. Bell's father, grandfather, and brother had all been associated with work on elocution and speech, and both his mother and wife were deaf.

Darwin had some expertise in geology, beetle collecting and dissecting marine invertebrates, but in all other areas, was a novice and ably collected specimens for expert appraisal.

The Bunker Diary sort of I guess
the fifth guy is a scientist who can detemine some stuff
but ultimately doesn't achieve anything
