specifically an inkjet

I don't know a lot about printers, but I need one to scan my artworks and books. I also want to use it for everyday office tasks. All recommendations and searching tips are welcome.

I haven't used a printer in years, but when I last did (about ten years ago) I was pretty big on scanning and as far as I can tell ANY printer you get will be decent at scanning documents as long as it's one where you manually set the paper on top.

I'd usually go in the $50-100 range so you should be ok with that but would still be good with a cheaper one.

One trick about scanning that I kind of went with is to place another sheet (one solid color) on the back of the document you're scanning to help if you're seeing text from a two sided document come through). Helped for me.

I'd mess with HP's most of the time, not sure if they still make decent stuff but I'm sure they do. Epsons are also decent.

Not op, but good tip.

Thanks for the information!

Do connection types matter?

Virtually every wireless thing is shitty and prone to weird issues, any flavor of wired connection is better. I'd think most cheap printers should have USB

I'm the first poster. If you see any candidates you're into, try to do a Google search on reviews on them. I remember some really annoying bullshit about drivers.

The only way to get it working with Windows 10 (which supports a whole bunch of crap generically) was with some fucking 300 megabyte HP software installation just to get the fucking driver installed.

See if the model you're considering has some Youtube reviews or installers that can specifically point out whether that's the case for the model in question.

Though, ideally you would think (especially since a lot of us on Windows 11 now) driver support for stuff has gotten better but you never know because that shouldn't have been an issue with Windows 10 I don't think.

Also just to clarify, once I did install that thing I could smoothly use the printer with any software I wanted (Irfanview, Vuescan, etc.) it's just sucked knowing I needed that specific installer to get it working.

thanks!

Thank you for reminding me of that! The last printer I had required me to install software from a sketchy site and the software didn't even work.

Do you think Tweakers is reliable for printer reviews? I don't know a lot of alternatives.

For anything I buy, I just do a independent search on Google for a review on it which kicks almost always kicks me to a Youtube video or videos on the item if they exist.

But I would just start with picking some models you like from Walmart or Amazon or whatever and choosing based on looks and other things you like about it like whether it does have wi-fi support of the design of it and whatever you choose from there will probably be popular enough to have someone who did a review on it and put it on Youtube, though not really sure on that since printers are probably not as reviewed these days as phones and other things.

If you do plan on printing with it, you probably want to select a model that uses those tank fill things (not sure what to tall them) but the Ecotank is a model that I think is pretty popular because buying traditional cartridges has always sucked balls because they're so fucking expensive but I'm still not sure how much the savings is for that ink, but I imagine it's better regardless.

continued...

I was looking at this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KH-wbDHQug because for some reason I don't really like white hardware aesthetics and it reminded me to probably tell you about scanners and you might want to try hard to find a scanner with a top/lid without an actual hinge and try finding one with a extension thing (I had one like that) that really helps when you want to scan thicker things like a book or something otherwise it'll only lay flush on a single sheet.

So far looking around, the Canon PIXMA TR4720 looks allright except for I think it uses traditional ink cartridges.

But, it's cheap $65, black, I think it can be controlled by phone or pc and has a nice control area on the top left and It does look to me like it has a little hinge on it going by this review here at the 1:28 mark it looks to me like that little extension to raise the lid is there.

Also apparently it has a feeder so you can also auto scan multiple pages.

Thank you for the suggestion! I've always used cartridges (and found it a pain to use), so I'll look for ink tank printers.
