How do I know if an etsy/ebay article is legit in the first place?

On eBay??? You have nothing to worry about, at all
EBay has buyer protection, if literally anything goes wrong you can get your money back. In fact you really only need to worry about scams if you're SELLING on eBay, as that's a plague with countless terrible buyers trying to get their shit for free
