I have spent a lot of time trying to install Windows to a new nvme drive with no luck. On the other hand, installing Ubuntu worked fine.

The issue is that I start the installation and before long it restarts, but after that restart it is only able to detect the USB installation media and my only option is to restart the installation, creating an endless loop. The drive is still recognised and works as storage.
I have tried just about every troubleshooting step I can think of:
>Using a different USB
>installing to a different drive
>installing both Windows 10 and 11
>using rufus to set up the installation media
>updating BIOS

It would seem a hardware issue is the obvious explanation but I tried installing on an old hard drive and had the same issue. I wonder if it's an issue with the motherboard but I don't have easy access to another machine to try it on.

If I switch from UEFI to CSM the new drive is detected in the bios as bootable however it won't actually boot from it.

The first time I tried installing I left my other hard drives connected and that seemed to mess things up. However the problem persists after disconnecting them all.

One other odd thing is that after I installed Ubuntu, I reconnected my current Windows installation drive and couldn't load from it (it didn't appear on the list of bootable drives, like the new drive when I was trying to install on it). I disconnected the new Ubuntu drive and still couldn't, however when I switched from UEFI to CSM the drive appeared there and I was able to boot from it.

Pls help this is driving me insane

I did not know about that.
Are there any real disadvantages then to using linux? I suppose I wouldn't have easy access to office that's about all I can think of.

sounds weird, i will try making sure the drive you're using is completely empty (no partitions) and redownloading/reflashing the windows iso
>Are there any real disadvantages then to using linux?
some windows software you might be familiar with will not be available
you will need to spend time looking for software alternatives if required
you will need to spend time learning how to properly use it
many games work out of the box, some games will require tinkering (as a compatibility layer is used), some will not work at all. you can check per game on https://www.protondb.com/. games with anticheat engines can be checked here https://areweanticheatyet.com/

as per office there's onlyoffice and libreoffice, or the web office version and google docs

i enjoy using fedora kde and tinkering with it, but you might not.

I think you are screwing up the partitioning part somehow. Try booting from linux and wiping the drive with wipefs.
partition in GPT.

Nvidia is not as good on linux but AMD is better on it.

I've done the second step multiple times.
Not sure about partitions. When I first connected the drive it was having issues relating to partitions but it stopped at some point. I've formatted it and deleted partitions, though it seems to have a small partition by default it's not clear what that's for.

To be honest I'm not even a big gamer and most the things I play are on steam. Most of the programs I use a lot are generic stuff like browser, notepad, media player and so on. I'll miss OneNote. though. A long time ago I used open office but it was kinda crap, seemed to have compatibility issues. That was over 10 years ago though.

I'll give that a try.
I have made sure it's in GPT already
