first, a quick overveiw of what a penodir is, since all the characters i'l be covering are more or less one of them

a penodir is a robotic species. thanks to the fact they're sapient and therefore have a soul, they have organic flexibility in regards to their mental architecture

penodir reproduce by loving an object so much that it turns into a baby penodir, which then grows up during a length of time roughly equivalent to human maturation. penodir do not age after hitting adulthood and can only die of injury or computer viruses

history wise, penodir started out as a species created by a pseudodeity (anything powerful enough to be mistaken for a deity that has not undergone apotheosis) to hunt other sapient beings for parts he could sell on the black market. to prevent the penodir from realizing what they were doing and revolting, the pseudodeity would periodically reset them to toddlerhood.

eventually the penodir were freed and, horrified at what they'd been doing, fled the homeworld. they now exist as a diaspora, connected mainly by their ability to communicate over radio waves.

penodir face a lot of job discrimination - it can be basically impossible for a penodir to get a legitimate job, depending on where they are.

info: archie... isn't technically a penodir. it's a living magic accident that heavily resembles one and happened to manifest on the penodir homeworld. its insides and code make no sense and shouldn't function. however, not being a real penodir is archie's worst fear

archie is constantly plagued with art ideas like the prophet of a mad god, which it expresses through psychedelic murals drawn in sidewalk chalk from a crashed freighter.

archie veiws the transience of chalk as a plus - it thinks rot and decay are the most beautiful, meaningful thing in the world.

archie cannot speak, communicating only in morse code and the orchestral instrument sounds that come from its mouth whenever it tries to vocalize.

archie can be very rude. it's also a recluse, only occasionally going to interact with the 4 others on the homeworld

info: bonnibel was part of project B.O.N.N.I., a project that sought to study penodir cognition by uploading them into server farms and picking through their code.

unfortunately, when you put a penodir in a server farm, they have a horrible breakdown caused by the discontinuity between their intended and current substrate and have to rebuild their whole self from scratch. this is exactly what happened to poor bonnibel

after 3 years, the scientists finally uploaded bonnibel back into its body, causing it to have another breakdown and attack a scientist.

this led to bonnibel getting shot in the leg (leaving it with a permanent limp) and subsequently being abandoned on the penodir homeworld.

during its time in the server farm, bonnibel deleted a lot of "unimportant" code to save space, including its voice. it communicates entirely in audio clips it picks up from radio broadcasts using its antennas.

bonnibel also has to manually execute the code to bent individual joints if it wants to move. because of this, it spends a lot of time standing still and just watching. that green stuff is moss :]

info: cain was raised by another species entirely, known as ghalnians. his parents practiced a sect of ghalnian religion that believes all sapient lifeforms should be converted into ghalnians (ie have their blood drained and have a mask attatched to their face specifically designed to keep them alive without blood)

his parents dropped him off at 13 to preach on the homeworld, unaware that it was abandoned.

his facepaint is in the shape of the veiwport on a ghalnan mask

cain doesn't only talk about religion, he also likes to listen to other species' radio shows.

info: penny was once an ordinary penodir, until her mother's ship crashed on the penodir homeworld, leaving her dead and penny with severe RAM and antenna damage

penny has trouble remembering anything for more than a few minutes. she doesn't even remember her real name - "penny dear" is a corruption of "penodir" created by her brain damage

she gets around this by writing in a book she carries with her everywhere, but its far from perfect. if she lost the book, it would be catastrophic

penny really likes rocks. she collects them

i made penny to cope with my own brain damage by making a character who had it worse, being mean about her will hit extra hard

info: the penodir system have the penodir equivalent of dissociative identity disorder.

they got it from being adopted by a man who only wanted a robot servant, not a child. whenever the person the system split from showed emotion or free will, he'd reset them to tweenhood. after 40 years of being forced to grow up again and again, the system managed to kill their abuser and escape.

however, this caused them to split into four alters, covered in my next post bc character limit

they spent a while hitchhiking around the galaxy, during which time they split three more alters.

and eventually they ended up stranded on the penodir homeworld somehow

note that the refrence i used is slightly outdated, they use acssessories to differentieate themselves, not hats

info: arthur exists to not remember what happened to them, that way they can function sort of. arthur is the self-declared leader of the penodir homeworld gang, and takes it upon itself to make sure everyone is safe and happy (to the furthest extent they can be, given the situation), to the extent of self-parentification. its also somehow both paranoid and naieve, believing that others are out to get them and rately thinking of other forms of harm.

info: sisyphus exists to remember what happened. she holds every memory they have about their life under their abuser. when faced with a non-penodir, she'll go into a servile, outwardly emotionless state. she has an interest in human mythology and named the others (save for arthur, who still has the name their abuser gave them) after mythological figures

info: ymir believes that everyone in the universe is ranked on a strict hierarchy, where lower ranked people have to follow the orders of their superiors or risk punishment. despite this, ymir is very cheerful and a master of staying that way, able to go from despair to its usual state at the drop of a hat when presented with an activity or person it enjoys. it speaks in 3rd person and refers to itself as "this unit"

info: lulal exists, essentially, to ensure the system's safety. during the day, he puts on an entertaining piratical persona to give others a break from the system's dysfunction. at night, after the system inevitably wakes up from nightmares, he patrols the area to make sure everyone is safe. he has exomemories of sailing the stars with beep boop and kat, a pair of penodir folk heroes.
