I'm looking for a story I read years ago in a lovecraft anthology book. The parts I can remember had the diary of a missionary/priest on a remote island. He slowly becomes more corrupt, joining the local traditions and eventually becoming head of the cult/town. Partway through I vividly remember him saying the other men in town where jealous that he took many wives. I think it ends with the town becoming desolate due to whatever god they worship with the diary being found by the stories narrator years later. The diary portion at least is set a bit earlier than most lovecraft stories (17th or 18th century I want to say) and it may have been part of a bigger story. I checked a few stories that could have fit in the electronic archive >the evil clergyman>shadow over innsmouth>the diary of Alonzo Typer>the dunwich horrorbut none of them seem to be itI don't remember the specific anthology I read but it should have been lovecraft only. Any help is appreciated. I'm not well versed in lovecraft at all.
