How do I view embedded images on 4chan? Didn't there used to be an extension called hiddeneye or something? Particularly curious if there's a way to do it on mobile.

Easily identifyable embedded files are now filtered out by 4chan.
Truly steganograpically embedded data images can probably still be uploaded, but those are then also not easily extractable by an openly available extension.

So when people act like there's something vile or disgusting hidden inside of another image are they just being retarded?

There are some thread topics that in reminescence of the old threads cause people playing along.
Sink threads are a classic, since pictures of sinks were the mark for the knowing where people would post embedded archives of stuff including child porn.
That's why if someone starts a thread with a sink picture people start playing along.
