You walk into a room with three paintings.

>one of them is a painting in a rectangular frame, in an abstract expressionist style, about the author's sadness
>one of them is a painting in a round frame, in an impressionist style, about a melancholic girl
>one of them is a painting in a rectangular frame, in a photorealistic style, of an elephant

When leaving the exhibition, you can talk to the other visitors about the paintings. Since no one knows the name or author of the works, you communicate using the nicknames “the abstract one,” “the round one,” and “the elephant one.”
But “abstract,” “round,” and “elephant” are not options within the same category. Abstract is the style of the first, round is the shape of the second, and elephant is the subject of the third. Outside the context of the paintings, these three words also never describe the same family of objects.
There’s no gotcha or implication of absurdity here, of course. People are just communicating effectively. But there’s a name for this diversity of *types of qualities* temporarily playing the same role.

I'd just call it a characteristic or a distinguishing property

Thank you, but that's the word that describes "abstract", "elephant" or "round". I'm looking for a word for the communication phenomenon where these characteristics, which describe different properties (genre, subject and shape), are used to describe the same family of objects (paintings), by transference (which is the case, since it's the painting's genre, the painting's subject or the painting's shape) or otherwise.

>op picture has nothing to do with the actual post
>op obviously just picked the only image in the cached file explorer directory for chrome/firefox upload/download
i refuse to put any more effort into answering your question than you put into posting it to 4chan so ill not give you the word right away. ill be kind enough to give you the clue that you can find the answer in one of the first google scholar pages when searching for metonymy
