I watched Yagate Kimi ni Naru recently but couldn't really read between the lines on the relationship. What should I watch or read?

you start with epstein

The Summer You Were There
Happy Sugar Life
Both solid picks with compelling narratives if you like tragedies.

Anime-wise just watch Watanare. Maybe also Sakura Trick. These are just basic ass funny openly gay shows, perfect entry level stuff, Watanare is also animated and directed incredibly well. Yagakimi is good but the anime ends absolutely nowhere sadly so I find it hard to recommend for people who wouldn't then read the manga, that and the characters are a bit autistic so I get why it can be hard to read the relationship.

Manga-wise there's a lot (yuri is absolutely a manga first medium) but starting with Girl Friends is always a safe bet. Here's a decent list of good entry-level stuff: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/548

LN-wise - Watanare, Shuukura, Adashima (really slow burner though). If you don't mind SF/action then Otherside Picnic is bloody good, but it's not entry level and the characters are somewhat mental (anime is sadly crap).

Game-wise Kindred Spirits on the Roof is the best entry-level yuri VN ever, lots of couples, very light-hearted but well-written stuff (any liar-soft yuri is good, but the other ones are a bit more hardcore and most are still untranslated I think). Flowers series is really good. I'd like to shill Seabed too but it's not entry level and it really picks its audience, so not the best starting point.

I'll try happy sugar life I've heard of it before

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Sakura Trick was the first yuri I watched waaay back I think I'll rewatch that first, it's been so long. For manga I've only read Nettaigyo wa Yuki ni Kogareru and the ending was kind of vague so I've been put off ever since even though I enjoyed reading it, so I appreciate the safe recommendation. For LN I've only ever read 3 titles in my life out of any genre so I don't know if I'll have the willpower to try something new. For VN too I've only played Rewrite and Dra Koi so I'll have to see if I can get my hands on one you recommended.

I'll try this one out too thank you

Nettaigyo is kind of notorious for the whole "girlship" thing. I personally enjoy these more ambiguous works too, but those who are into yuri for the explicit romance often don't.

Is there any good yuri from outside japan?

Do you mean "yuri like in Japan but not from Japan" or non anime related western/chinese/etc WLW works?

For the former, often brought up are VNs by ebi-hime, Studio Elan, nomnomnami (most are on the relatively shorter side). For the latter there's a much, MUCH bigger selection of stuff, but as I'm only interested in things that look moe enough I'm not well-versed in it. Currently reading some Finnish WLW fiction for language practice, but if it's not moe it's really not the same for me, sadly.
