I want to watch Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water but there's an issue with subtitles:There are uploads on nyaa with subs either by "Rising Sun" or by "THORA". Apparently one/both of them are localized liberally and are not faithful translations.There might be more but I don't know where to look, don't have much experience looking for anime resources.Which subtitles are the best for this?

Most every release nowadays includes soft subs packed in the video file. Older releases had seperate files for each subtitle track and those sorts of rips are very much still around, like if you download a Netflix rip they're usually like that. There are a few duds here and there, especially with fan translated stuff from the 00s when it was the fansubbing wild west, and sometimes it happens with official releases too. But for most shows you can just grab whatever has the most seeds on nyaa. And even with the duds, if you don't speak Japanese and it's not Hadena-tier incomprehensible - you'll likely won't notice any issues anyway.Like the other anon said all releases these days are softsubbed, so if you don't like the subs for some reason just grab some alternative set from animetosho or kitsunekko or whatever.

The last 1% is fansubs, mostly for Chinese shows that aren't being sold to western markets but are actually pretty good if you give them a chance *cough*will eternal*cough*. And of the few things getting fan subs, the majority of them are getting machine translations...

I'm just not used to anime compared to manga where I find it easier to change to a different release.Also Nadia is one I fondly remember from my childhood, but...(1) ...it was dubbed into Arabic where most of the plot gets excised and modified horribly(2) ...I was too young and my grasp of the language was weaker back then(3) ...I started watching from literally the last episode so everything was a classic mindfuckI'm trying to avoid giving myself a bad experience again hence too many questions.

I seriously doubt there's worse subs, the only important thing would be you'd want the release to be consistent, which I'm sure every packaged release would be. Just watch the first episode to see if whatever subs seem acceptable (I think the ADV English dubs were fine even)
