The hinge cover thing on my laptop is busted and I need to transfer 500 GB worth of data. What should I use for storage? I'm looking at a 500 GB HDD from Amazon right now, but is there anything better? Looks like USB sticks at 500 GB run at $100+, and it seems better to buy a HDD/SSD at that price point. I also want it to last for a long time. The HDD in question:https://www.amazon.ca/UnionSine-Portable-External-Storage-Compatible/dp/B091FS79T8
I forgot to mention I want the price to be $50 or under but $100 and under is fine too. I just don't want to rape my wallet before I even buy a new laptop.
>>1564825That looks like garbage. Yes it probably works, but it's a nothing garbage brand, and you don't want to store anything you care about on garbage. If you're looking for an external HDD, the 2TB Seagate drives are normally the best value.https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/seagate-expansion-2tb-usb-3-0-portable-external-hard-drive-stkm2000400-black/15565584 You can get a 1TB, but they aren't much cheaper. The 2TBs used to sell for $80cad all the god damned time, but we live in AI times now, I hate that I didn't stock up when Amazon was selling them for $40. $130 is sadly now an acceptable price...
>>1564829>Yes it probably works, but it's a nothing garbage brand, and you don't want to store anything you care about on garbage. What's the worse that could happen? And thanks for the rec, I'll definitely get the Seagate drive.
>>1564826Backups are always a good idea. Depending on the laptop you could probably remove the storage and/or fix the hinge.
>>1564830>What's the worse that could happen?Fake drive with fake controllers, so it says you have 500GB, but you only have 4GB of real space. So it lets you try and move gigs over, and says it's doing it, while it deletes everythingThat's not quite so likely with a 500GB HDD, more likely with thumbdrives with large capacitiesMore realistic issues is the drive failing really quickly (you can't return it if it lasts a month), or constantly disconnecting for no reason while you're trying to transfer files

>>1564829>2tb/$40CADthat sounds amazing
>>1564841nta but I've heard decent things about them. They're considered to be at the same level as Seagate and Western Digital. I've had one for a few years but that's too early to attest that they're good.
>>1564841Toshiba is fine ime. Standards change over time and sometimes there are bad batchers but I have regularly used WD, Seagate, Samsung and Toshiba in the past and am currently and have no issue with any of them. I'd go for the 2 TB option. As an archive solution, $20 for the extra 1 TB is a good idea since it's very rare that anyone decides they need less storage.

If you buy from Staples it will be a legit drive. Not a fake one. The drive will have an actual warranty for a period of time. Thing is you could just buy a USB 2 or preferably 3 enclosure and take your existing drive out of your laptop and then connect it to another computer. I've done this lots. I see by the .CA and mentioning Staples that you're Canadian. Do you have a memory express in your vicinity? They sell USB enclosures for hard drives. Just make sure it's the right size for your drive. Also if you have an SSD instead of a hard drive, obviously make sure it can handle your SSD. Some enclosures are limited in drive size capacity they can handle but most laptop drives are about 1 TB or lower so you most likely won't have issues. It's when you get into desktop drives that you have to check that stuff because their drives are much bigger capacity wise. You should also check Kijiji. I see portable external drives go for peanuts on there all the time. With an enclosure you can always swap out another laptop hard drive in future so you can have multiple external drives. It's just 2 screws and a LED light cable and the pin board. Just have to be careful with mounting the drive to the pin board. Easy peasy. 500 gb drive is too small. Get a 1 TB minimum. More if possible. You can look into doing complete computer backups using clonezilla free open source computer backup software... Youtube it.

It's out of stock right now but it's good to have an eye on in the future. I ordered the Seagate one for now.>>1564867>Thing is you could just buy a USB 2 or preferably 3 enclosure and take your existing drive out of your laptop and then connect it to another computer.I'll also do this.>Canadian.Yes.>Do you have a memory express in your vicinity? No.My hard drive is an SSD ("NVMe BM9C1 Samsung 512GB"). As for my laptop, my brother has the same one and the hinge got busted on his too like months ago. He says the hinge part is shit and it's not worth fixing it since the hinge might break again anyway.>You should also check Kijiji.I will.>I see portable external drives go for peanuts on there all the time. That's nuts!>500 gb drive is too small.
