Most of the illuminations are specifically in reference to whatever the text accompanying it is but often they use contemporary situations (heraldry/symbolism/whatever) as an analogy for the text. It's just that so much time has passed that what was at the time something identifiable by everyone and common knowledge like religious iconography is lost (just like if you took a meme 500 years back to the past few people if anyone would understand, they have no frame of reference or common cultural understandings to draw from).
