I cannot use his real name because of his professional status, but shall call him Bob Rame. What follows are extracts taken from a diary which he has kept of his own experiences. I have carefully checked the entire series of episodes and spent much time interviewing him. He writes as follows:
"I wish to write it down in the event I, for some unknown reason, or unforeseen one, cannot repeat it in the future. It is not intended for any other puipose than to place it down in some kind of record, for someone, I know not whom, for what reason, I know not. I shall not tear it up or destroy it, in spite of future developments, as it is as honest and objective a record as I can make it And as candid."I was constructing a set of built-in drawers and a cupboard in our children's room. In a desk cubbyhole, a piece of plywood had to be glued in place with a cement. As I brushed on the cement, I noticed a feeling of lightheadedness and for a period I remembered nothing; when I was conscious again I was still brushing on the cement, but my arm and face were covered with it where I had evidendy simply laid down on the newly spread surface. Fom the smell, I realized that I had probably been 'out' for a moment due to the ethyl ether content of the cement. The can had a big warning notice on the top to use with adequate ventilation."I thought about this experience for a while. I remembered as a child experimenting with a can of gasoline, smelling it until a dizziness came over me. I remembered the strange effect of ether and nitrous oxide in the few times I had had it, and my puzzlement over the strange feeling , not dreams, but feeling . I remembered having dental work years back, and while waiting for the dentist to finish another patient, I experimented with his ‘auto feed’ nitrous oxide machine, It was a pleasant memory.
"My first attempt at inhalation from the can ended in my first surprise. One night, unable to sleep, at around two in the morning I went into the room where I had been working, obtained a can, and went downstairs and sat, occasionally taking a casual smell from the can. Nothing out of the ordinary happened for a while, not even dizziness. Then quite suddenly, as I looked at the can, I felt as if a ray or some kind of energy 2 had come down from a low angle and bathed the upper half of my body. I could not see this ray, everything in the room appeared the same, otherwise I felt and thought the same, it was as if I could sense the outline of it. It did not spread over the room, it was as if a flashlight had been turned on me, the outline of the beam being in that shape. The feeling was that of some slight warmth, a very low frequency vibration in the lower part of my body, a sense of relaxation, 3 and a knowledge that this was some form of communication. I had the feeling that I was participating in a communication, as though I were listening in on a telephone line where no one was speaking. After several minutes, the ray seemed to fade away, and did not return. Puzzled, I went to bed and slept
"I repeated this inhalation experience a number of times thereafter. These are my impressions of what went on within me. Several times I seemed directly in contact with a place that appeared to be a night club, although it may not have been that, I was in both auditory and visual contact with the place. It looked to be a room some twenty by forty feet It had a raised platform at one end, similar to a small bandstand. The center of the roam was bare, such as a dance floor. Except for the handstand, the room was dimly lighted, and cigarette smoke drifted across the lighted area on the bandstand. There seemed to be many people around the dance floor, and they seemed to be waiting for announcements. There was a microphone on the bandstand, but no orchestra. There was a slight buzz of conversation from the people around the floor, and the room felt quite warm."My vantage point was to the left as you face the stand, at the edge of the floor, as seen from a standing position. As I watched, a man in an illfitting suit, rather chubby, walked up to the stand with several pieces of paper in his hand, made some announcements to the assembled people, reading from the papers, then stepped two steps down from the stand and walked away, I waited for sometime more for something to happen, then left. On successive visits to the same place, the place was completely empty, or the same condition existed as on my first visit. I have never been able to understand this particular experience.
"Other times after inhaling from the can it was as if I tuned into various radio stations and people were talking, mostly along the line of jazz, foreign languages, odd music, and fast chatter. I made no attempt to do other than to listen, and no awareness of me was present, nor was any attempt to communicate with me present. Several times I was overwhelmed by what seemed to he a tightly jumbled series of voices, mostly in languages I did not understand. The 'messages' were coming so thick and fast that I couldn't seem to get through to anything. 4 The feeling that accompanied it was that these were unimportant, personal messages, and that it was too bad that the 'line' was tied up with these."At other times no matter how much inhalation, nothing seemed to happen. I would get the feeling that I was being wound up tighter and tighter, as if something were being speeded up faster and faster (my pulse stayed the same, and I had the definite knowledge that I overshot the 'point'), and I was doing nothing more than getting a jag. 5 This same incident occurred many times during my experimentation with exactly the same results. In the end I would get sluggish in speech and body movement, and decided to lie down and sleep. Upon awakening I seemed to suffer no more than a consuming thirst, and the entire sensation was gone, as a matter of fact, at no time have I ever felt serious after effects.
"My first experience that struck me as being more than a dreamlike state was one night when I lay down to go to sleep. Not being very successful at sleeping, I picked up my can of cement and began to breathe it deeply. I suddenly slipped into the condition I have described earlier, namely where there was some sort of ray either entering my body or leaving it 6 I do not know which. I began to feel tired and forced myself out of this condition. I waited awhile and a heavy roaring started in my head, and some sense of low vibration appeared in my legs, and I decided to stay with it this time. A force seemed to be sweeping up and down my body regularly, 7 and I got a lit le used to it. I thought I would try a little of its power. I mentally tried to force the power to move me upward out of bed, it did! I floated upward to about four feet over the bed. Rolling in the air, I looked hack down at the bed and there was my body, still in bed!"My wife was sleeping alongside my body, and I could clearly see her. I floated over her, by willing it, and then moved down and patted her on the cheek. She didn’t respond, then I floated back over my own body, and began to have concern about my getting 'back in,’ Floating down I came in face to face contact with my body, but felt nothing. My physical body was lying face up, and I had floated down facing downward. I grew worried, and then I seemed to remember, and rotating on my body axis, I turned around and faced upward. There was a sudden blending, and I was in my physical body again, eyes open, looking out through the window into the half dark sky. I sat up in the dark, smoked a cigarette, and thought about it.
“Later I went into a similar condition when lying in bed. I curiously reached over the side of the bed and felt the floor. Using my sense of 'power' I pushed on the floor, and suddenly my hand slipped right through it to the sub-floor. I felt around on the sub-floor and there was a nail, a chip of wood, and some sawdust. I pushed deeper, and my hand went through the sub-floor and went into a small stream of running water. I moved my hand around in the water for some time, and didn't go deeper simply because my arm was extended as far as I could make it go. I then carefully withdrew my hand, looked at it, but it was dry, then my sense of power faded after which I felt my hand with the other to be sure it wasn't wet I have often wandered what would have happened if I had let go of the power when my hand was stuck elbow deep in the floor?
“Around three in the afternoon I lay down to think, as is my habit. The weather was rainy and it was quite humid, the month being June. Without any feeling of the vibrations I've mentioned previously, I found myself floating against the ceiling of my office. A friendly thought came into my mind which said, Tf your soaring is that good, go to it,' and proceeded to open the door so I could go outside and higher. I felt that the door in this impression was merely a symbol. It seemed as if somebody who was quite friendly opened that door and was amused at the soaring on my part, as if a friendly understanding teacher was letting a child out to play for a while because he was too restless to concentrate. I went out through the door and picked my way upward through the trees, ducking branches until I came into sight of what seemed a mesh of wires and tree branches. I seemed to be able to go no further until I thought, and realized, that these were not branches and wires obstructing me, but were instead some sort of power or force field. Immediately upon this thought the wires and branches disappeared, 8 and I was soaring upwards strongly, faster and surer. It was an ecstatic exhilaration that I felt as I extended my arms out from my shoulders and soared in great joy. I sailed far above an enormous white cloud bank that extended in both directions as far as I could see, I was about to go higher, when I felt myself being pulled back, not a tug, but a gende definite elastic type of motion. I started backward and down, realizing I must, and not disappointed or depressed because I had to return. The clean joy and beauty I had experienced could not be dampened.
