Is it true that modern Hinduism is a byproduct of British colonization
Define "modern"
>>41001568>is it true that a set of traditional practices that is older than England is the result of British colonialismYou will gain the knowledge one day, just not in this life unfortunately
>>41001568Only in its perception as a singular religion. However there might be some western influences on some yogic ideas from things like Theosophy.
>>41001583>the regurgitated readings of vedic and kabalistic texts influenced its own sourcesYeah i remember seeing a book by vivekananda about theosophy. Didnt read it cause i thought it would be trash. But there were writings by contemporary acharyas rebuking the influence theosophy was having
>>41001568yes particularly the current love for non-dualism especially westerners
>>41001910*especially among westerners
>>41001910The funny thing is that not all Hindus are advaita. There's other viewpoints, ie dvaita, vishishtadvaita . I don't know how western pop Hinduism became so hooked on advaita.
>>41002046you can partly thank swami vivekananda
>>41002046psychdelics
>>41001577> Define "modern"1800s - onwards>>41001580> implying religions don't change overtime
>>41002046if you read the upanishads or Bhagavad Gita it clearly points to some kind of of non dualism
>>41002398That's an interpretation you prefer. Of course, dvaitins would flat out disagree with you. I'm just a casual observer with no skin in the game
>>41002398> ancient texts in foreign languages > clearly
>>41002046because advaita is the closest to atheist materialism, which is the default belief of a westerner trained in a scientific school system that is stripped of religion. So naturally they will gravitate to a "religion for atheists", which is what introductory buddhism is as well. Only when they have faith in the spiritual world, then will they drop away advaita.Basically its intellectually comfortable for a mind trained in the western scientific school system.Science is the negation of spiritual knowledge, because it only seeks material explanations. Which is an enormous blindspot if a person takes science to be the totality of knowledge.
>>41001568yea thats why ramakrishna said all religions are true
>>41004214This guy hit the nail on the head. While monism is by no means new in India, it was the transcendentalists like Emerson and Therou who latched onto Adi Shankara and the Bhagavad Gita and tried to combine it with a post-Christian/neoplatonist worldview that eventually got imported back into India through British colonialism and reform movements like Brahmo Samaj and was then exported again under Ramakrishna’s students and later the hippie/new age movement. The culture shock comes when you see how Indian religon is really practiced, where it’s both highly pragmatic (pray to the god who gets the job done, even if it’s Allah or Jesus), while also paradoxically very based in traditional culture, which is why you see the cow dung baths and people parading around crippled children as incarnations of some god. Ram Mohan Roy and even figures like Guru Nanak and Mahavira tried to reform it, but the folk religion is too engrained and too pervasive in Indian culture to ever fully disappear.
>>41005594so your saying the teachers actually knew some stuff but the folks and low classes do the things we see jeets doing?
>>41001568Sometimes im in shock impressed how dirty Indians are. The last Indian Sikh have talked to hasn't showered for a full 4 years. Can't imagine how much feces, and bodily fluids carrying. Possibly carrying deadly viruses. Now imagine a group of them. Then a city, then add their food receipes that is basically just vomit called food.
