Your mind is getting ready to drift off, your body is slowing down, freezing in position to not hurt yourself (thanks ancient ancestors for the horrors), your mind steps over to the dreaming , your body is now fully off. Than sometimes your mind wakes up, comes back from dreaming but not fully to wake the body up.
Very uncomfy feeling and bonus round is that the mind is still being to some extent effected by the changes in your brain during dreaming.

I'm 32 and I've only ever experienced it once in my life, but I was barely conscious during it and was like, "I can't move, that's weird" and just went back to sleep
