Why change it from esotericism to mysticism?
There's a bit of a difference between the two. One take says that mysticism is concerned with the finality of the spiritual life, with the union with God, while esotericism is more concerned with what happens along the way to the union.
Is this a shift of focus in the general?

/cmg/ seems to be rather popular
>>
Please forgive my ignorance, I’ve really only just begun my journey. I was thinking about the nature of the soul and I’m not sure if I am on track.

The soul is eternal, and comes from God the one. The soul is separate from the flesh, you are not your meat; but the flesh imparts desires onto your soul while you are here. We are here to celebrate and experience life, glorifying God and seeking to enrich our souls. We suffer and learn hard lessons that develop our souls in our lives, dying and starting again. We continue this cycle until we are ready to return to God’s kingdom.

Or am I misunderstanding completely?
>>
>>41075034
The soul is the quality of being alive, ensouled beings are just living beings, stones don't have souls but plants do, because stones aren't alive but plants are
The soul is a created being, it has a beginning, the soul is the form of the body, it acts on the body, the body doesn't act on the soul, think of it like a video game, you control your character, your character can't control you
Why we are here is a long story, let's just say the reason God made the world is because if he hadn't, we'd all be in hell right now, i can explain it in greater detail if you want, and we are here to return to God and free ourselves from sin
There is no reincarnation
>>
>>41065071
How to traverse these difficult times? I am disgusted by the people around me lacking so much empathy and essentially wishing me dead because of my ideas.
>>
>>41075287
Would you say we are in hell now?
So the good news is that we are saved by the sacrifice of Jesus and we need only believe in our salvation?

Tangential, does the Unitarian have a leg to stand on? And what of those who for whatever reason have no knowledge of the gospel, like sentinel islanders?
>>
>>41075317
Step one is to stop viewing yourself as a victim
>>
>>41075317
Die to the world, be in it but not part of it
>>41075476
We aren't in hell, God created the world so that we would not be in hell, this is our chance to be saved
And yes the Gospel is that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God who died on the Cross for our sins and rose on the third day, on the topic of belief versus works, that's a false dichotomy in the emd, they are one, but yes belief is central
On the topic of heresies, would God let an old Catholic lady go to hell because she doesn't understand the Trinity quite right? That wouldn't be just, but genuine spreaders of lies? That's another story
>And what of those who for whatever reason have no knowledge of the gospel, like sentinel islanders?
Ignorance cannot lead one to hell, it's out of your hands, but God has written his word in our hearts, salvation is possible to all, and just how there are many inside the Church who won't be saved, many outside of it will be saved

Nope.
>and Enochian magic tolerable?
Nope, they aren't.

If you want magic, there's a real miracle at every Mass and Divine Service at your local Catholic and Orthodox parish right around the corner.

After all, they are the ones who come to us in search of the sacred host.
After all, after their spells, books, and mumbo jumbo, you realize that all they are is an aberrant parody of our Masses and prayers.

Go to the original source, and if, after a simple and honest prayer to God, you need more, there are perfectly legitimate and accessible mystical paths, such as third monastic orders like the Franciscans or Orthodox Hesychasm.
>>
>>41075654
In the Caribbean there are those Vudou religions that mix Catholicism with African traditions and European Magic, they pray to Lwa and Identity them with Saints, something they rarely if ever do is pray to Bon Dieu, the Good God, why? They see him as more distant
These traditions are wrong because they create distance between Man and God, the Lwa are intermediaries because that's how Africans see God, just like the Pagans, distant and indifferent, but the Christian God is closer to us than our own heart
And in the end magic is just about lowly things, evil eye protection and money spells, theurgy is the highest magic and is religious in nature, and what is the theurgy of Christianity? The Sacraments
>>

Is there someone here who has experience in Hesychasm and who mastered the Jesus prayer? If so, do you have any tips on how to get into it?
>>

I think you should ask at your Church for that, but generally, read the Philokalia, you can recite the prayer in whatever length you want, from the whole thing to just "Jesus" and everything inbetween, in Greek or your own tongue, don't do any specific bodily positions and don't control your breath during it and you'll be fine

Yes i have practiced them, don't think it's the end all be all when it comes to practice, it's complementary to the other work, i also recommend to you don't do the whole month first, start by doing the first week, and try only doing that over and over a few times, not in a row but with a few break days in-between, that will prepare you, then you can try a whole month
In reality the text isn't for you, it's for your spiritual director to prepare your work, but sadly some of us don't have that luxury

What are the mystic implications of the Holy Trinity?
>>
>>41081238
The more you'll learn about the various traditions the more you'll understand just how different they are
>>41081471
The Trinity is the Unknowable Essence of God in Three Persons, from it God's Energies emanate and are called Light, they are the Platonic forms on the Mind of God
Man as the Image of God reflects the Trinity in his Soul, as Memory, Intellect and Will, the Intellect through the Will is Illumined by the Light of God in the Memory, and that is the Beatific Vision, the Intellect is Illumined by the Light of God and transformed by it
God became man so that man might become god
Sources: Saint Augustine, Dionysius the Areopagite

Can't you also say that the three persons of the Trinity are three hypostases, in the same sense as the Neoplatonic hypostases (the One, Nous, and Soul) of the Godhead? The One is God the Father, Nous is God the Son, and the Soul is God the Holy Ghost.

I don't think the word "esoteric" should necessarily be de-emphasized, as it points to the inner experience of the divine.

The popular connotations of the words "esoteric" versus "mystic" do differ, of course.

Substantially, I would say that in the journey to salvation, the works of (say) Rudolf Steiner are less helpful than those of (say) Thomas Traherne. But we all take different paths to the Kingdom, from different points of departure. So the more inclusive, the better.

All the Christian writings on Sophia that I can find either sound like borderline schizos doing a trapeze act to not be idolatrous (or straight up being idolatrous) or sounds like pseudo intellectuals pretending that they can understand the schizos by writing as much complicated jargon and semi obscure references as possible

I'm convinced that a Sophia/divine feminine principle exists biblically, but mainstream Christians are unwilling, incapable or scared of explaining it in a way that's accessible to the broad public. Mariology is the closest we have, but it's deeply flawed, incomplete and even at times dishonest.
>>
>>41090422
Sophia is part of the Opd Testament in the Wisdom texts
God, the Unknowable Trinity reveals himself to his creation as the Divine Ideas of Plato, they are all identified as God's Energies or God's Light, and they are the Primordial Waters the Spirit hovers over in Genesis 1, they are the Wisdom of God, that's it
Also read Jakob Böhme
>>
>>41090539
"That's it" implies that everything you just typed is simple and easily understood
Also bohme is one of the borderline schizos I mentioned. I'm aware there's a strong likelihood that he's just over my head, but my point was that there aren't any basic level texts on the topic. Mainstream Christianity very commonly just brushes proverbs 8 off as a metaphor
>>
>>41090569
I know it's difficult to understand but that's because theology requires a lot of background knowledge, I myself was unable to grasp it until I looked into over 2000 years of west eurasian religious history
I'll try to simplify, God is above everything, he is above all his creations, but, God interacts with his creation, to do so he limits himself, this self-limited God is his Wisdom, think of how God cannot die, but since he became human in the form of Jesus Christ, he was able to die
Sadly there isn't any good material on God's Wisdom that isn't scattered in the Fathers, just read about the Orthodox Essence-Energies distinction and you'll know what Wisdom is, as Wisdom is God's Energies
>>
>>41090612
I appreciate your advice, but you're looking at this from a technical perspective. I'm more interested in a personal take, knowing Sophia as a person. People always take this the wrong way because they read carnal desire into it, but I've had experiences that I think pursuing the person of Sophia will help me to understand. I'm also considering the possibility that I'm being fooled by Satan.

Then just read the Bible
>>41091425
Basically after ww2 we discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Levant and the Nag Hammadi texts on the Nile, the Dead Sea Scrolls were written a bit before Christianity by what we call the Qumran Sect, who we think were a subset of the Essenes, an Ascetic Jewish sect, most of the texts are just books of the Old Testament, then there are copies of Apocrypha in it, the Book of Jubilees and the Book of Enoch, and lastly there are sect specific texts in them, like the War Scroll or Community Rule, the former is an Apocalyptic text talking about the spiritual war between between the angelic armies of God and the armies of Belial
The Nag Hammadi texts are a collection of different works, some are Platonic, a few Hermetic, most are Gnostic Christian texts, the Gnostics were a Christian heresy who had many heterodox beliefs depending on the specific sect, Nag Hammadi is mostly Sethian and Valentinian texts, Sethians were a loose set of Gnostic groups connected by similar ideas concerning Seth the third son of Adam, they're the Gnostics who believed in an evil Demiurge, whereas the Valentinians tried to be much closer to Orthodox Christianity, for them the Demiurge is much more neutral

Instead of the Dead Sea Scrolls, I recommend starting with this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1250325293

It contains: the Books of Enoch, the Book of Jasher, and the Book of Jubilees. All three add helpful context for interpreting the Bible, and were cited by the Apostles. Enoch is especially eye-opening.

Study of the DSS is more profitable for those who already have a deep and detailed understanding of the Bible and Christian origins, and can thus appreciate all the subtle particularities.

I have been receive dreams from The Holy Spirit, i know they are important, but when i wake up i keep forgetting them.
Anyone know of prayers to remember dreams as well as t gain the wisdom and discernment to properly interpret them?
>>
>>41107579
You are not supposed remember them, but to let them sink into your soul and take effect on it like an ointment.
>>
>>41107590
Interesting. So how will i know when the time is right for those dreams to have impact on my physical life?

Anons I seriously need your help. I want to get baptized as soon as possible, but I don’t know which denomination and church I should go to. Can you help? Are there other anons who weren’t baptized at birth and only later found their way to the faith?
>>
>>41109306
Do you want your future denomination to be selected by randos on 4chan?
Don't get baptized until you're absolutely sure in your choice, at most we can give you material on it, but the choice is yours, when you have a good reason to choose one denomination over the other, then you'll have reached your goal
>>
hello anons, i hope youre having a good day. can someone pray for me? ive been struggling with a lot of things recently, and i need God to talk to me and give me an answer, but i think Hes mad at me... its hard to get close to him when taking into account my condition
>>
>>41109405
No, of course you can't and should decide it, but maybe you know resources, especially writings, that could help me choose, books that make an argument for a specific denomination or books that show the differences.
>>
>>41109508
Well what do you need prayers for and why do you think he's mad at you?
>>
>>41111163
in general i just need guidance from Him, i need him to answer me but i know i also have to get closer to him, but its hard to do anything when im going through a depressive episode. i dont want to say too much about my situation, i dont want to be judged, sorry, i hope you can still help
>>
I think I'm being harassed by a demon/multiple of them. How can I tell if I'm not just being paranoid? And how can I get rid of them for good?
>>
>>41111201
I just prayed for you and i also suggest praying yourself as well starving the flesh.
I recommend doing a fast, try fasting for 12 hours and pray during it, a fast without prayer is just a diet, a fast with prayer helps connecting to God, read scripture while doing this as well.
And do research on Christ as well, here's some YouTube channels that can help.

>>
>>41111796
Thank you, anon. Again, I can't tell if I'm just being paranoid or not, but these last 5 or so years I've been very bad mentally. Long story short, I have BPD, depression, anxiety disorders, and recurring nightmares that make me wake up screaming. I struggle with suicidal thoughts daily, and even though I've been medicated since 2018, I never really feel good, and no therapist has really been able to help me. They may just be symptoms of my mental illnesses, but I can't help but feel like there's more to it.
>>
>>41111796
Oh oops, I thought you prayed for me lol. Mb
>>
>>41111856
I myself have disorders, they in and of themselves are not demonic but they do make people with them easy targets for the demonic and all forms of evil. I myself was also medicated but thanks to the power of Jesus i was able to get off of them, they didn't help anyway, just did damage to my body.
But in your case the recurring nightmares are a bad sign, i suggest looking into exactly what is in your nightmares and look into their meanings, i also recommend checking out the MercyTV and Faithfuldiary channels i posted here >>41111796 as they ave videos on dreams and nightmares. They're Plotagon animations but they are really full of information and helped me a lot.
And feel free to ask them anything in their comment section. They don't get a lot of comments so they're sure to respond to anyone who needs help as well as other viewers of theirs.

Do you have what it takes to become a Carthusian monk?

>In the first place a candidate must be a practicing Catholic with a well ordered religious life and at least a fundamental education in the Faith. Furthermore, he must be physically and mentally healthy, have an aptitude for solitude as well as for life in common and be ready to fulfill all those obligations dictated by his state or imposed upon him by his superiors. Among the qualities, with which candidates for life in solitude should be particularly endowed, a sound and balanced judgment is of prime importance. Candidates younger then 20 years and older then 45 years we normally don't receive. Besides this, a candidate for cloister monk is required to have an education sufficient for a monk destined for the priesthood; singing ability; and sufficient knowledge of Latin, which he must attain before entering the novitiate.

Latest nightmare was about 5 days ago

>Be me
>Walking around my neighborhood
>Suddenly I see a dead person lying on the floor
>He's bleeding
>I get scared so I try to hide somewhere
>I enter a grocery store
>I approach the person on the counter
>He was killed too
>I notice the killers are inside
>I hide behind the dead person's body
>They notice me and approach me
>They start threatening me with knives and guns
>One of them starts telling me their names for some reason
>I cover my ears
>He keeps going
>After a while they get distracted because they were robbing the store
>I get out and run away
>I scream and warn the neighborhood
>One of the robbers starts shooting at me
>I can't remember if I got shot but then I wake up

I often have nightmares like this where I need to hide and I get shot/stabbed/killed, and most of the time I wake up screaming

My ears are too prominent
I just went for an otoplasty consultation because I thought my ears are too prominent, Doctor confirmed they are.
Doctor said my ears are like 70 degrees but 30 degrees is average
I want my ears to be less prominent. I want my ears to be 30 degrees
I want to get the surgery but I can't afford it. I can't even afford the deposit

Please bless me either with tens of thousands of dollars extremely soon or with less prominent ears so each ear is both very close to 30 degrees. I want them to be less prominent.

>>41118183
I'm a man and it's hard not to care
It'd be easy if my ears weren't objectively very prominent
There's stickers and stuff to kind of pin them back but they suck. They take forever to put on, they're not invisible, and your ears look different everyday because you can't apply them consistently

They wouldn't have deleted my thread if I was asking for a sex change
>>

Anon, God made you in his image and you were created with beauty. You're ears are fine, please do not do a surgery, that's not what God wants for you, he wants you to be comfortable in the body he gave you.
>>
>>41118461
I agree that jannies and mods are terrible at their jobs but in this case i say take this as a sign from God to love yourself for who you are and how he made you.
>>
>>41118470
>>41118479
I'm an adult I can't pin them back permanently without surgery
no putting textbooks on my ears won't fix it

My ears over prominence isn't from God

If my parents taped my ears back when I was very very young or applied pressure to them then they would not be prominent like they are now
They didn't do that
They just mutilated my genitals when I was born
They barely fed me , when they did it was often the corpses or secretions of animals tortured in factory farms
I could be taller

humans moral failing of my parents
They divorced
They "remarried" new people

yes they are very bad at their jobs and their pay should be halved until their performance adequately improves and their pay should remain halved until my ears are both 30 degrees permanently or at least for years straight.

It sounds like your issues are not your ears but your PTSD with being an abuse victim troughout childhood.
I'm sorry but no one here are professional and it'd be irresponsible to try to give you advice on this subject so i suggest finding someone who knows how to handle child abuse victims aas well as staying off of 4chan because to be blunt and honest you're not going to be able to find any help on this website and if you keep pushing this then it's only going to get worse.
Please take my advice, leave and find a professional who knows how to heal you, no one here can heal you but we can point you in the right direction.

That mentality is poison for the spirit and the soul and you will never live you're life with satisfaction even if you get everything you want if you continue to walk this path.
I welcome you to join the path of Christ but if you're unable leave behind this mentality and keep rejecting then there's nothing anyone here can do to help.
I suggest you either find Jesus but if you're not able to at this moment then it'd be best for you to leave.

Do we study Christian Kabbalah because we believe it's an ancient tradition and how it testifies Jesus? Or do we use it as a Jewish tool against them?
what are the optics here?
>>
>>41125266
Why would we use it against them? They don’t concern me
>>
>>41125266
>Or do we use it as a Jewish tool against them?
Why not both?
>>
>>41125266
Neither
Jewish Kabbalah is medieval in origin, the Church Fathers predate it
The thing about it having been used for polemics is exaggerated, English-speaking scholars love to turn all of history into European Christians being malicious to everyone around them, Christian Cabala is it's own tradition with its own sources, it developed out of the Idea that Kabbalah preserved parts of the Prisca Theologia, but the fulfilment of it is the New Testament, Christian Cabala only gives secondary importance to works like Sefer Yetzirah, Bahir or the Zohar, and places them together with Philo of Alexandria and Ibn Gabirol, something Jews don't do, but the primary sources are always the Church Fathers, in particular Dionysius the Areopagite
>>
What is the starting point for all this, Gnosticism?
>>
>>41125556
Gnosticism is a group of Heretical Christian sects, our Gnosis is the Christian Gnosis of Clement and Origen of Alexandria
If you want a good primer, read the book Theosophia by Arthur Versluis

"Theological monism, or non-dualism, is the only heterodox form of religion to have been made illegal in England since the Reformation, and as this historical occurrence can shed some light on the anarchic effects it has had on those who believe in it (...) According to Norman Cohn, (the author of The Pursuit of the Millenium, Paladin, London, 1972), ever since the non-dualist doctrine arose in Europe in the twelfth century, its devotees have been divided into two sects or schools, one of which follows the implications of self-deification ruthlessly and without regard for social consequences, while the other does all it can to disguise itself, making a zealous practice of religious orthodoxy, so as to be more orthodox than the orthodox. René Guénon and his followers clearly belong to the latter sect, and are therefore the better able to form relationships with devout people who could be converted.

"If we call these two the Social and Antisocial sects, it is not hard to perceive the attitude of each of them to the other. The Antisocial would be sure to see the Social as fainthearts and compromisers who dare not follow the doctrine all the way, while the Social would see the Antisocial as barbarians who exploit the doctrine for their own personal gratification, even though they would say it is not theirs but God's. In the mid-seventeenth century, both of these sects were rapidly gaining in strength in England towards the end of the Civil War, at which time they were known as 'Ranters'."

- Robert Bolton
>>
"The situation caused by this doctrine was felt to be so serious that a law was passed against it by the Rump Parliament in 1650, the second year of the Commonwealth, while Cromwell was engaged in the Irish wars."

- Robert Bolton

------------------------

"The penalties allotted under this law were on a 'three strikes' basis: for the first offence, it was six months to 'Prison or to the House of Correction'; for the second it was banishment; and for the third, of returning without License of Parliament it was death."

- Robert Bolton

------------------------

"Every creature in the first estate of creation was God, and every creature is God, every creature that hath life and breath being an efflux from God, and shall return into God again, be swallowed up in him as a drop in the ocean...That if a man by the spirit knew himself to be in a state of grace, though he did commit murder or drunkenness, God did see no sin in him...all the earth is the Saints, and there ought to be a community of goods, and the Saints should share in the Lands and Estates of Gentlemen, and rich men."

- Thomas Edwards, on the Ranters' doctrine.
>>
"The above text shows the connection between the non-dual Ranter doctrine and egalitarianism, a kind of proto-communism. That is perfectly logical and inevitable, because the equation of all individual persons with One Being must obviously make them all equal to one another."

- Robert Bolton

------------------------

"It was clear that there was not much the law could do about this doctrine, since it could only restrain outward behavior, but could do nothing about the interior conditions which gave rise to it. For all the law could do, Ranterism was still able to spread secretly, and the 'atheistical blasphemies' were often reserve for private occasions. The resolution of this issue came from Quakerism. By one of the mysterious acts of Providence, the rise of the Quaker religion began about the same time as the monistic doctrine of the Ranters, namely, a religion with no hierarchical or institutional structure, and for this reason they were able to get close with the Ranters and reason with them."

- Robert Bolton

------------------------

"They said they were God; but that we could not bear such things...Then seeing they said they were God, I asked them, if they knew whether it would rain tomorrow? They said they could not tell. I told them God could tell...after I had reproved them for their blasphemous expressions, I went away; for I perceived they were Ranters."

I really enjoyed Evagrius and his description of the 8 pitfalls of the flesh and human mind, and to reach "aparthia" of the mind. He was one of the desert fathers I believe but his description of the mind constantly at odds with certain pitfalls that disturb us in our spiritual journey is relatable and something im interested in learning about most.

What to read in order to deal with the inner workings of the spiritual faith and making our mind more holy? I know its a gift from God to increase in the holy spirits presence, but it takes some work I believe. What author talks about inner christianity well?

Ps. I dont wanna dwelve into whats commonly known here as "gnosticism". I know that can mean a few things, and many christian writers use the word to just mean a meditative state with the holy spirit, but im not interested im the demiurge type teachings or other herseys.

Christian Gnosis is the Christian tradition derived from Alexandria, Clement and Origen of Alexandria are the two main representatives, Evagrius is directly dependant on Origen, you can start by reading Origen's Peri Archon/On First Principles
