>>41073125Yeah sometimes christianity is a little strange because if someone takes your coat you don't have to hate them or hold a grudge for it but you should probably just run away and not give them your shirt unless it looks like they really need it more than you and are homeless or something. Also the whole "doing good to those who do good to you= little/no credit" is pretty strange too, of course it is okay to do good to those who do good to you and its not any less admirable than doing good to the evil only. overall the whole love thy neighbor part is okay though.

Recently I had some fucked up things happen to me and people I care for and the way I see it is how the buddha explained it; everything changes, therefore bad things can come and good things can go at any time (other way around too of course which creates happiness when good things come and bad things go), and this can create suffering if you weren't expecting it to happen (which if you knew about the nature of reality it shouldn't be surprising because everything changes). Therefore since everything is impermanent and therefore everything has the capacity to cause suffering due to its impermanence, everything should be regarded as non-self, not really mine, on account of the fact that things that cause suffering shouldn't be considered as something you own because why would you want to own something that is so volatile and fickle. Loving kindness may heal wounds but it won't stop people in your life from repeatedly tearing those wounds open so they never heal.

>>41077355Listen bro you should understand that in the subtlest forms, there is no difference between "you" and "others" and anything that benefits you benefits others and vice versa. As long as it is a wholesome benefit of course such as a nice sunset or a cup of tea or something similarly benign. What i mean to say is, it is perfectly fine to not want people to be assholes to you, that doesn't make you selfish. Do not let modern culture in its binaryness make you think it must be all one or the other, that you must be all selfish or all selfless, like a heartless killer vs a martyr saint. At the end of the day we can examine and change our own actions the best and all we have are our actions to stand on, which is why I stand firm in that the best way to get your coworkers and family to treat you better is to spread loving kindness to them. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to say to kowtow or grovel, stand your ground on what you feel is important. However you must see that anyone who is an asshole to others can only be that way because they are an asshole to themselves first. This is why I like buddhism so much, because it is very logical and direct about how to find peace without any need for worshipping or faulty logic.
