Don't mention sound proof earbuds or using white/brown noise, i live next to the highway and i have an overly sensitive ears (hyperacusis) i know people meditate in cities of India and China so i want to know how they pull it, I hope someone can help me because i really like to meditate but the noise with my overly-sensitive ears is fucking it up, hearing the noise of vehiles especially motorcycles brings me anxiety and cuts me from the mood. Thanks in advance Anons
>>41100484Have you tried noise-cancelling headphones?Of course the true Yogis can meditate in the middle of a rock concert, but most of us are not at that level yet. Maybe someone in this thread will have some tips to get there, as it is a common obstacle.
>>41100484You are not alone in experiencing this, I understand that it is difficult with hyperacusis. One way is to start with very short meditations, observing the noise as an object of meditation rather than as an aggression. Little by little, your attention can return to the breath, the body, or to more internal sensations. Don't forget that the inner universe is much larger than the external universe: the external world is only an illusion, while your inner space is infinite. This is where you can anchor yourself, little by little, without judging yourself. Courage, you are not alone.
>>41100691I guess i have no option but to start slowly and build up, thanks, i 'll note this comment in mind
i had similar situation like you years ago. from my understanding, the beginning of so-called meditation is to receive your environment as it is without any judgement. i too hate noises. my hate is the judgement to the external stimuli. if i perceive it as it is without any judgement, then it would be different.i tried using sound proof earbuds but that means i'm still denying the reality around, which negate one of the purpose of meditation, to be aware without clinging or pushing away. trying to meditate in the environment that doesn't fit with our preference issa hard mode, but if one master the way i think it will be much more impactful than retreatfags in bali.i'm a newfag to esoteric so might be wrong. wish you good luck anon.

>>41100484you can't. you reach a level of awakening and you realize all around you are demons. it's practice in buddhism to go to a monastery but it isn't out of the question to become a mountain hermit to gain knowledge. you must obey nature, participating in its destruction just by being there causes distraught.
>>41100924>before enlightenment, wagecucking>after enlightenment, wagecuckingliving in the city doesn't imply the destruction of nature. what matters is how we live. chop wood, carry water; swipe card, ride train. the essence doesn't change.
I can't seem to find it in a search engine, but I recall reading about a monk living near a bunch of whirling dervishes constantly making noise. When asked how he can concentrate with all the commotion, he responds, "I just let them whirl"
>>41101243thanks for this, i will research for infos about this using my alternative research skills
Meditation is a scam. As anything else in the right hand path.
unironically keep trying.just sit there and do it. adapt by exposure, learn how to thrive in this situation by being in it. it's not about pushing through, just let go. keep trying.
>>41102316Thanks anon, the human brain gets used to everything
>>41101243It's never the outside noise that makes people feel bad, it's how they think about the outside noise that makes them feel bad. We have a choice to control our own minds, or let the noise control our minds for us.>>41101658Everything is a coping mechanism. Your attachment to the idea that meditation is a scam or a coping mechanism is itself a coping mechanism. Would you prefer a surgeon to be lazer-focused on his task or would you rather they be distracted by outside noise while operating on you?
>>41102665Exactly, it's not the noise in it self, it's the feeling of anxiety and mood distruption that gives me
>>41100484Your options are, in increasingly unreasonable terms;>put up with the noise until you don't notice it>get earplugs>get ear muffs>install new double or triple glazed windows with internal sliding windows to block out the noise >move out>write letters to your local civic authority asking them to relocate the highway>start a cult and engage in mutual group ritual magic to manifest the highway moving elsewhere>commit suicide so that the highway never bothers you again>engage in guerilla military operations to force them to reconsider moving the highway>blow up the highway
>>41102316>>41102613Anecdotally, it doesn't for everyone, and trying to force it might be more bad than good. I used to really enjoy meditation for years until my town got hit with the never ending army of loud motorcyclists, and after aboit two years of trying to maintain the habit despite it being no longer enjoyable I eventually realized that trying to meditate with that going on was having a strictly negative effect on me, and I wasn't ever going to adapt to it, so I gave it up until further notice. Your mileage my vary though depending on whether your noise sensitivity is more psychological or or originates from a lower neurological level. (Mine is definitely neurological.) For sleep though I do find proper sound dampening earmuffs + white noise to be helpful.
>>41103743Basically to the extent that people in India or wherever might be able to tolerate the specific noise that I don't seem to be able to tolerate, I assume it must be because everyone with my genetics just died off due to stress heart attacks while they were urbanizing so there are none of my type left there to complain about it.
Can’t get out of something you’re not in. If you’re taking yourself to be the meditator, and seeking an out. That’s the bigger in. Before you even start. Self can’t get out self. Realize it’s not you, breathe, watch, meditate, or don’t. Realize you can be free, because it was never you.
>>41100706How do you feel if you lie down, and don't think about meditating so much? Is the noise still an issue then?I fucking hate road noise so god damn much.
>>41103478kek
Meditation is not an absence, rather it is an acceptance. Know that you cannot control the world around you, only how you react to it
>>41100484The entire point of meditation is to make you realize that silence is noisy and that everything is alive and living in their purpose it’s meant to awaken you to the reality you are in regardless of the circumstances don’t build an attachment to authentic silence because there’s no such thing
Also what about white noise at a moderately loud volume which is quite close in the audio spectrum to crashing waves on a beach
>>41104820highway kind of is whitish grey noise already.
>>41100484Meditate on the noise. Pick out sounds and see if you can identify them. That's what I used to do when I lived next to a highway. Eventually I was able to meditate on other objects like the breath or a vipasanna topic even in the midst of that noise.
>>41104842I also noticed you said no white noise sorry I missed that
