Because ideally he doesn't want us here, he wants us with him, there's no actual motivation for him to keep you safe and prosperous in this plane of existence. If you really want God's actual protection, be a major player in his game. Be an advocate of his moral truths and justice, not the narrative that's been created by the world. But even then, there's still a good chance he'll let you get martyred. Just remember, trust in his will. Maybe asking for God's protection isn't what you should really be asking for.
