On a spiritual level, what's going on here? It seems like a lot of important religious and cultural movements have originated here, like I don't think anyone could contest that, but I can't get a handle on the exact spiritual forces at play here.

East of Oakland, Walnut Creek is unexpectedly nice and that continues South down 680. North of Oakland like Berkeley is inhabited with the nastiest breed of lunatics even fathomable, partially because they're not entirely stupid, just simply deluded or under a spell of some sort. Places like Vallejo and Concord and Antioch are more methy and disordered and "barely just hanging on" vibe and can be randomly quite dangerous.
