Every Mediterranean society that left us writings indicating what their beliefs were like in the bronze age seem to have a roughly similar idea that everyone goes somewhere dark, dusty, and shitty and that it would always be better to be alive than dead no matter the circumstances. Of course, every society that left us iron age writings about their beliefs indicate that this idea suckes and they wanted something else and came to with various ways to escape to a better fate through the intervention of demeter or what have you.
In the Jewish case I expect there's several thousand lines of commentaries explaining that although sheol is the true word of god it doesn't really count and you'll get to go somewhere better if you listen to me, because the rabbinical approach always seems to be to just pile on rules lawyer bullshit to do anything you can to justify avoiding following the thing you apparently believe is the literally commandment of god.
