Low resources means limited reach and limited growth. And the groups that do wrench money from followers are made of bad actors. They don't teach anything of real use. The human brain can sense things computers can't. We just aren't to the point of being able to 100% chronicle everything. This when mixed with personal perceptions and beliefs creates a haze of confusion that is hard to interpret. You can try to chart it with generalities, but weeding out outside influence from things like faith plus inside influence from things like perhaps having an altered state of mind makes creating full understanding and data compilation difficult. Example: a shaman uses hallucinogens to see the spirits. How much is his belief in spirits, how much is the hallucinogens, and how much is the actual spirits native to the world? And a Catholic will simply say he's a liar high on drugs and/or dealing with devils...
