Lovecraft wrote his books out of his experienced dreams (or so it's said that he said), and being a sensitive type, was able to touch the shrieking madness that the paranoid finds when he touches reality. If one touches reality with a positive outlook, it's still scary but much less maddening.

And they declared gnostismicm a herarsy and established the authority of the orthodox church.Most a apologists and modern Christians like to try and down play the gnostics involvement in the early days of Christianity, but they were a large sect. Marcion was the first to attempt a Bible cannon, and Valentinus was almost pope.The truth is if the gnostic ideas had won, these people would all be gnostics. They don't approach this from a critical view, they approach it with foregone conclusion that what they belive through faith is correct, and try to disprove everything else. If gnostimism was mainstream Christian belief, and there was a group of Christians that belived exactly what they belive today, and rejected gnostismism, they would be calling those people heretics.
