In orthodoxy they say you are aware for 40 days after you die. You meet demons, maybe saints too, idk. But you spend forty days awake during which you learn your ultimate fate. You are a ghost fo forty days and you know you're going to hell and you can see your family, imagine that. Then you sleep until judgement day.
