there is an "eternal" "independent" "self". It's just very different from the material concept of the self. The best way I can describe it is a self that informs itself by others indistinguishably(which begs the question if there even really is any separation at all) instead of developing itself through it's own internal mechanism that rely primarily on it's own existence. Your options now are to either embrace the reality of the situation and transcend yourself or try to develop an eternal self by keeping your consciousness post death and sometimes either option involves dabbling in both.
