The books that your so-called mainstream Christian now views as canon were once simply books among many other books, many interpretations. What was considered "canon" wasn't uniform, and the fight to define what was canon involved a lot of active suppression and villainization. It's another example of victors writing history, and the reason why Catholics and Orthodox Christians number in the hundreds of millions to billion, while there are only about 70k Mandaeans worldwide.
