I speak back to you from my time, in which depression has been turned into an identity. They call themselves “burnouts”, and suffer from abundance dysphoria. But in slang terms we refer to them as miserites. Or “frownies”, as a slur. “The fried”. “Lamentards”.It arose in the same way other illnesses were co-opted into identities, by the same scientific and academic and political mechanisms that recontectualized autism and transgenderism and transracialism and therianism. The frownies have championed the medical intervention of limbic system ablation, a form of a microscopic lobotomy, as a means to own and cement their conditions.They claim, in a way, for them it is relief, or “addiction prevention”. Artificial intelligence had created once unimaginable experiences of narratives and power and joy, both theatrical and immersive; video games and movies and stories and virtual reality are all considered one of the same. Everyone is a god within their own machine. Most people are utterly dependent and cannot live without a machine, yet some still choose to be bored and claim it was never living in the first place. Bored and left empty with unlimited opportunity.The frownies lament the “death” of the artist while completely missing the art. They claim there can’t be a forest without “real” trees. Choosing to not acknowledge the art and experiences we have at our fingertips. They choose to not find joy in what the machines can do. Yet their pathetic virtue signaling has become a movement. They are, ironically, proud to be depressed. Proud to be deprived. They want everyone to be just as miserable.

Everyone gets all their BASIC needs met (food, clothing, shelter, medical, dental) with a "Universal Basic Income". But there's little room for anything more because unemployment is over 94%. People become nihilistic and depressed. They race hovercycles and routinely crash and die. They do (illegal) drugs. They sell drugs and join gangs because there's nothing else to do. They base jump from tall buldings. The commit suicide (directly or indirectly).There's nothing to live for, nothing to strive for, and nothing to do.
