Look at society yourself directly and see that people pursue their basic needs. People are driving from place to place, working for money, taking pleasure in things. They want to live and happiness facilitates the process of life. They want happiness. They only want pain when value is percieved in it, that they evaluate positively. Living creatures do what they are structured to do and they do it well in cutouts of a system. But the struggle for life doesn't perfectly translate to the whole society you don't really see. There are thousands of nuclear bombs, flaws in economic policy, irrational resource extraction and more generally, things that any reasonable smart person could easily get rid of if a magic genie made them the unburdened king of the world. There are no magical genies though and there is no king of the world. The elite is a crowd, a herd. They're bureaucrats with the trappings of ego just like the little guy and the music of their local perspective puppets them around all the same. If you want to replace agricultural mistreatment of animals with something less offensive to you, you have got to go about your business and hope that the struggle for life you can clearly see at the intersection and the ice cream shop will eventually translate up to the top of the system. Nobody is out there singlehandedly saving the world. You can go eat a bad steak or a good one. You don't actually know how your money contributed to animal suffering or whether your choice was right for the point in time you made it. The quality will have some effect on your well-being but the main effect will be that you'll have some energy. Energy for what? Energy that will be used to do whatever it is that you do to chase your basic needs, such as buying more steak, participating in a system you don't control that you hope will eventually lift suffering from the animals. Unless you're contributing to the logistics of scaling lab-grown meat or something, don't worry about it.
