I think the truth is somewhere between Marcion and orthodoxy, in that the earliest Christians mostly accepted the Old Testament but either split it up so that different passages were understood as being from/about different gods even if the text calls them both Yahweh like the Gnostics, and/or they rejected portions as having been added by scribes like IIRC the Ebionites and also some of the Gnostics, or they interpreted large portions as wholly allegorical like, again, the Gnostics, and maybe Paul. But this level of schizo-interpretation applied to Old Testament was just too much of a pain to keeping teaching converts, so it fell out of favor compared orthodoxy and Marcionism (it survived for a long time) which accepted and rejected the Old Testament at more-or-less face value despite it making certain details awkward.

The issue is the "orthodoxy" was borne out of the Judaizers/the Petrine faction/the "Church in Jerusalem" and thus could never really divorce itself from Judaic Law. Even after witnessing Christ in His ministry and receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, they only had a vague understanding of the importance of the Incarnation.

Marcion was probably right to jettison the whole of the Old Testament, because needing to include it necessitated "orthodoxy's" ridiculous purity spirals which have defined its existence.
