How come nobody can agree on if Halloween is a Christian holiday or a pagan holiday?
>>
>>41371265
Because the truth is too nuanced for most people. While the Pagan observance existed in Europe first, it actually died out and now people larp it. The Christianized observance still exists and has its own traditions but isn't widely popular anymore. Both have been overshadowed by costumes, candy, flavoured coffee and horror films.

it's because it IS a pagan holiday that got co-opted by christians. the discussion isn't about whether or not it's christian (unless you're a profoundly retarded christian that also thinks christmas was always originally christian), it's about whether or not we can consider it technically christian now that christian communities heretically practice it as the norm even though the bible forbids such events.

This is pop history bullshit and any amount of research will tell you this. The first reference we even have to Samhain doesn't come until like the 10th century and it's from Christian monks describing what Irish pagans did from their own point of view. It's not even unbiased information. Halloween as we have now received it is thoroughly a Christian holiday, specifically a Catholic holiday, that at this point is just very Americanized. It's literally in the fucking name "Halloween", literally the Eve of Saints (All Saints Day on November 1).

>Fucking bait/slide thread, but at least a fucking succgen or nobody or some other fucking bullshit thread died for this one.
All right, you primitive screwheads, listen up:
>Samhain (pronounced "sowen"): pagan harvest/pre-winter celebration
>Hallowe'en (all hallows' eve): vigil of the christian celebration of the faithful departed
It's not that fucking hard, goddammit.

Who the fuck thinks it is a Christian holiday?

Anyone with even the slightest historical knowledge.

Yes this, but also, it’s actually a psychological holiday at this point and it was long ago. As weather got cold and you had an abundance after harvest, you’d all eat a lot to fatten up, Halloween and thanksgiving both do this, Christmas does at the beginning of winter, before all the death would start.

Halloween in the 1800-1900’s was a way to let kids let loose, essentially to burn them out on misbehavior while they were in the workforce. Boys who were coal miners or factory workers would go around and offer people “trick or treat”, and they’d expect a ransom of some cookie or bakery treat, and later candy, or they’d fuck up your house and stuff, we know about toilet paper and egging and silly string and shaving cream these days, but back in the day they’d do pretty fucking crazy shit all things considered, and they’d go around with just burlap sacks on their head or flour sacks, so either white ghostlike or like the scarecrow, pretty fuckin cool, they’d also use this night as a way to attack locals who were assholes, like if some guy screwed the town, some men and boys would go vandalize their shit. Even 15 years ago similar things to this happened, and probably still to this day, but it’s much less prominent.

But yeah originally 9 year olds who swung pickaxes or worked machines all day got together in pseudo costume (masks) and kinda just had a mini purge, and they’d have a bag of loot with sweets and coins and other shit people gave them as a nest egg to get them by for a few weeks or months.

If the first record of it is monks documenting what pagans did, it’s definitely pagan then.

I fell for this meme a long time ago.
Halloween is not pagan. Its pagan "roots" only became a popular idea in the last 100 or so years, trying to connect the Christian holiday with the Celtic new years festival.
Halloween is All Hallows Eve or the eve of All Saints Day (Hallow meaning Holy, Saint being borrowed from the Latin for Holy) and it was not originally celebrated in November. It used to be celebrated in May and Easter in different parts of the Christian medieval west and east. It only became November 1st in around the 700s AD. Vigils of course, which happen prior to many Holy-Days (Holidays) were common the day before one, so Halloween was a vigil day worshipping and praying before All Saints. Solemnising the deathday of a Saint has been part of Christian tradition since the very beginning of the faith. The original pagan festival of Samhain had no jack-o-lanterns or costuming of any kind. All of that were later inventions.
It's all LARP. If a Wiccan or Germanic Pagan say they're "celebrating the true halloween" with their carved vegetables and commemoration of the spirit world which was stolen by those evil Christians they're all plastic LARPers who don't even know what they're practising.

50% of Christianity is stolen from Pagans.
The other 50% is gifted to them by their owners the jews.

Fuck off

It is celebrated massively by normies and most normies are Christian. I don't think it's pagan or christian because the ritualism of it isn't explicitly or implicitly tied to either or in terms of modern Halloween practice.
