EVENTS OF DECEMBER 1996- 12/6/96: JonBenet appeared on her own Little Miss Colorado float during the Lights of December Parade on the Boulder Mall. Her behaviour during this parade - described as "provocative" - would later form part of the grand jury investigation against the Ramseys. A videotape may exist.- 12/23/96: The Ramseys host a Christmas party with approximately 30 guests attending, with former journalism professor Bill McReynolds playing Santa Claus. JonBenet later told witnesses that "Santa" had promised her a secret visit after Christmas.- 12/23/96: Someone attending the Ramsey's Christmas party placed a 911 call; the caller hung up without saying anything. An officer responds to the home and is told by Ramsey family friend Susan Stein over the intercom that there is no emergency, the officer leaves without further investigation. The accidental 911 call is later said to have been made by Ramsey friend Fleet White misdialling a number.- 12/25/96: After a normal Christmas morning, the Ramsey's attend a small Christmas party at the home of Fleet and Priscilla White. They leave at 9 pm and briefly visit family friends the Stines. They return home around 9:30 PM. Both JonBenet and Burke are put to bed by 10 PM. John and Patsy go to bed at 10:30 and claim to sleep undisturbed through the night. - 12 AM: Neighbor Sees Lights at Ramseys. Scott Gibbons looked out his kitchen window at the Ramsey residence and observed the upper kitchen lights were on and dimmed low.- 2:00 am: Neighbor Melody Stanton heard scream.- 5:45 am: Ramseys awaken, ransom note found- 5:52 am: 911 call placed
EVENTS AFTER THE 911 CALL UP TO FINDING OF THE BODY- Boulder police arrive. JonBenet's room is sealed off but the rest of the house is unsecured.- Burke is taken to Fleet White's house and questioned by an officer.- Multiple Ramsey family friends arrive to the home. Some clean the kitchen area, potentially destroying valuable evidence.- By 10:30 AM all police except for detective Linda Arndt depart the residence, leaving one detective in charge of a crime scene filled with multiple people.- At approximately 1pm detective Arndt suggests searching the house again from top to bottom.- Shortly after 1pm John and Fleet search the basement. John Ramsey enters the wine cellar room, turns on the light, and finds JonBenet's body.- John Ramsey carries JonBenet upstairs, setting her down on the floor. Though it's unclear why, Arndt then picked up the body again and moves it to the living room near the Christmas tree where Ramsey knelt beside her.- Arndt claims to experience a moment of non verbal communication with John Ramsey which causes her to become so unnerved that she counts the number of bullets she has on her, later telling an interviewer she did so because she "didn't know if anyone in the house would still be alive when backup came."
THE BODY- JonBenet's mouth was covered with duct tape, a nylon cord was found around her wrists and neck, and her torso was covered by a white blanket.- Cause of death was strangulation and a skull fracture. Strangulation was done via a garrotte that was made from a length of nylon cord and the broken handle of a paintbrush which had been taken from Patsy's art supplies.- Sexual assault committed probably via the paintbrush handle used to strangle her.- Disagreement among experts if there was evidence of prior sexual abuse.- Some hold that the violation with the paintbrush was done specifically to disguise evidence of previous sexual abuse.- Pineapple or fruit cocktail containing pineapple likely eaten shortly before death. Bowl with pineapple in it found on the kitchen counter, both parents deny feeding her pineapple on the day of the murder.- Possible evidence of a stun gun being used on JonBenet although this is also disputed.- Red heart drawn on her hand with marker.- Body showed evidence of being wiped down after death.- Animal hair - believed to be from a beaver - was found on the duct tape. This hair could not be sourced to anything in the Ramsey home. UKNOWN DNA - A small amount of unknown male DNA was found on JonBenet's underwear.- The amount is so small and degraded that even with current (2025) tech it cannot be used to build family trees in a genealogical database, only to exclude potential suspects.- Has been used to "rule out" many people, although the value of this is uncertain - because there is such a little amount of DNA, some suspect that it is merely the DNA of a factory worker who handled the underwear. - Boulder police claimed unknown DNA from six different people found on the nylon cord, unlike the underwear DNA this is rarely referenced in more recent case updates.
RANSOM NOTE- Long and rambling, one of the longest, if not the longest ransom notes in history.- The note was written on a pad of paper, using a sharpie, taken from and left within the Ramsey home.- A "practice note" found written on the same pad.- The note demanded a ransom of $118,000, the exact amount of a Christmas bonus John had received. - Many individuals have been made to provide handwriting samples to compare to the note over the years..- Many have noted very strong similarities between the content and language of the ransom note and certain movies. These include: Dirty Harry, Poltergeist, Ruthless People, Ricochet, Speed, Seven, Nick of Time and Ransom. - The note was signed Victory! S.B.T.C the meaning of which has never been determined. WHO WROTE THE RANSOM NOTE?- Many criminal profilers, hand writing experts, psychologists, and lay people have attempted to determine the author of the note both through handwriting analysis and analysis of the language used in the note. Some examples:FBI agent Clint van Zandt: The writer is a well educated female between the age of 29 and 40 who knew the family and the home well and knew that JonBenet was dead when the note was written.FBI Profiler John Douglas: The writer is a white male in his 20s with a personal grudge against John Ramsey.FBI Profiler Robert K. Ressler: "JonBenet's mom fits the profile of the person who wrote the phony ransom note found in the Ramsey home" (...) the style and language and information contained in the note point to an approximately 40-year-old white woman from the South as the author.Donald Pugh (Patsy's father): The writer is a middle-aged female with a background in law enforcement. Dr. Fausto Brugnatelli, handwriting expert: John Ramsey most likely wrote the ransom note.Boulder PD: Made Gary Merriman, Access Graphics Director of Human Resources, give seven handwriting samples. Felt there were strong similarities between his writing and the ransom note.

ENHANCED 911 CALL- At the end of the 911 call Patsy placed to report her daughter missing, there is a heavily disputed moment where the phone was allegedly improperly hung up and voices can be heard faintly. - The significance of this is that it is claimed that Burke's voice can be heard, which contradicts statements by the Ramsey's that he was still asleep at the time.- At least 10 different audio companies and agencies have made attempts to enhance the voices on the end of the tape.- At the time Boulder 911 reused 911 tapes, and some believe that the voices are remnants of an unrelated call on the tape.- Some believe that the 3rd voice on the tape is not Burke, but an unknown third person.- Among those who believe the enhanced audio to be genuine this is the most common transcript:PATSY: "Help me, Jesus, help me, Jesus"BURKE(?): "Please, what do I do?"JOHN: (angrily) "We're not speaking to you"PATSY: "Help me, Jesus, help me, Jesus"BURKE(?): "Well what did you find?"- In a now-deleted AMA on Reddit, former Boulder detective James Kolar supported this transcript of the enhanced recording.- A recording of the enhanced tape which was made public is a third generation copy. BURKE RAMSEY- JonBenet's brother, 9 years old at the time of the murder.- Had behavioural problems, although the extent and severity of them is not clear.- Voice may be heard on the enhanced 911 tape, although this is disputed.- Children much younger than Burke have murdered other children, but Burke's "keeping the secret" from trained psychologists and therapists would be nearly unprecedented.- Widely speculated to be on the autism spectrum which would explain some of his "inappropriate" mannerisms in adult interviews.
MISC CASE ODDITIES - If the ransom note was taken at face value, than a foreign faction had kidnapped a Lockheed Martin executive's daughter for ransom. The lack of action by the FBI and the lack of notification to Lockheed Martins security personnel before the body was found is extremely unusual. Some believe this indicates high level knowledge from the very beginning that this was not a legitimate kidnapping.- Ransom note demanded exactly the amount of a Christmas bonus John had received.- A dictionary removed from the Ramsey home had a corner of one page folded over creating an arrow pointing to the definition of incest. - At one point, the police stopped sharing their most sensitive information with the DA's office, and shortly thereafter their computers were hacked into.
GRAND JURY IVESTIGATION- Original judge presiding over the grand jury was Joe Bellipanni. Shortly after giving an interview where he stated he was looking forward to the case and getting to the bottom of the mystery, he abruptly resigned his position and moved to Egypt. He was replaced by Roxanne Bailin, who later co-authored a book with Patsy Ramsey's lawyer. - The grand jury convened in 1999 and voted to indict the Ramsey parents as accessories to their daughter's murder.- One of the counts was that the Ramseys "did ... permit a child to be unreasonably placed in a situation which posed a threat of injury to the child's life or health which resulted in the death of JonBenet Ramsey". Another one of the counts was that the Ramseys "did ... render assistance to a person, with intent to hinder, delay and prevent the discovery, detention, apprehension, prosecution, conviction and punishment of such person for the commission of a crime, knowing the person being assisted has committed and was suspected of the crime of murder in the first degree and child abuse resulting in death". The indictments accused the Ramseys of (either wittingly or unwittingly) allowing their daughter to be in contact with a person or group who abused her and, when that resulted in her death, attempting to cover up the crime as the work of an intruder.- Then district attorney Alex Hunter chose not to prosecute the Ramsey's despite the grand jury's verdict.
FRIEND DYNAMICS- The closets friends to the Ramseys before the murder are usually stated to be three married couples: Fleet and Priscilla White, John and Barbara Fernie, and Glen and Susan Stine. - At the Ramsey's party, Fleet is the person who supposedly accidentally called 911. Susan Stein turned police away when they arrived.- At Fleet White's party the night of the murder, Fleet left the party to join a group of carolers going door to door. This has been pointed out as unusual behaviour for an upper class party host. Some have speculated that something happened at the party that angered or upset him.- The Stines were the last people to see the Ramsey's before JonBenet's murder.- After JonBenet was found missing, the Whites and the Fernies were called to the Ramsey home. The Stines were not.- The Fernies were the first to arrive at the home despite living much farther away than the Whites. - The Whites relationship with the Ramseys deteriorated after the murder while their relationship with the Stines grew stronger.
FLEET WHITE- Was with John when JonBenet's body was found.- Claimed to have taken a brief glance into the windowless room where JBR's body was found earlier in the day but had not seen anything.- Handled the duct tape found over JBRs mouth, contaminating evidence.- His daughter, Daphne, had disappeared several months earlier in 1996 resulting in the police being called, she was later found in the home hiding - reports conflict as to whether she was in a cupboard, crawlspace, or under her bed.- Had a falling out with John Ramsey in the weeks after the murders - according to multiple witnesses, he had berated John for not cooperating with the police investigation.- Not long after the falling out, John and Patsy thew suspicion on Fleet and his wife, Priscilla, for being suspects in JBR's murder.- Immediately and voluntarily gave hair, blood, and saliva samples to the police after the murder - this strongly points to him either being innocent or being confident that there were no forensics tying him to the crime.- According to author Stephen Singular, Fleet pulled a handgun on John during one of their arguments.- According to members of a JonBenet forum who pooled money to hire a private investigator to look into Fleet - the investigator refunded their money, and told them that he was not willing to look into Fleet as his named was "flagged" in certain databases.STATEMENTS FROM PATSY'S FRIEND PAM GRIFFEN"White was everywhere," she told me. "Ordering everyone around. Telling people what to do and not to do. Giving me the creeps. He didn't want me to be alone with Patsy. Didn't want me in the bedroom with her. Didn't want me talking to her as she was falling asleep. He didn't even want me to help her drink water to keep her from getting dehydrated. I was trying to assist my friend and couldn't understand why he was acting this way. Someone finally had to tell him to back off, so he took a hike and disappeared.”
BILL AND JANET MCREYNOLDS- Ramsey family friends, it was Bill who played Santa at the Ramsey's Christmas party. JonBenet had told people that Santa had promised her a secret visit after Christmas.- Janet had written a play decades earlier where a girl is tortured in a basement. The play was based on a real life crime.- Newspaper article front the 70s about Janet's play quotes her as "being fascinated by stories of children who are tortured and seek their own path to death."- Also decades earlier the McReynolds daughter and her friend had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a man who was never identified. Both girls were released alive.- McReynolds had a strong bond with JonBenet that some find creepy. She had gifted him a vial of glitter, which he took with him while undergoing heart surgery. He also requested that the glitter be mixed with his ashes when he died.- Main argument against McReynolds being responsible for the murder is that he was in his 70s and in poor heath at the time.- No forensic evidence found connecting the couple to the crime, their DNA is also not a match for the unknown DNA.
JOHN ANDREW RAMSEY / JAR LOOKALIKE AND BOATMAN- John Andrew Ramsey is John's adult son from a previous marriage (JonBenet and Burke's half brother).- A police report that was not made public until years later was from a neighbour who witnessed John Andrew - or someone who resembled him - outside of the Ramsey home on the afternoon of the murder.- This could not have actually been John Andrew as he was verified to be hundreds of miles away at the time. - "Boatman" refers to an unidentified person who came to Boulder police with a bizarre story about John Andrew trying to hire him to kill JonBenet in a fake boating accident.- According to Boatman, the proposed plan would have had John Andrew taking JonBenet out in a small boat, and then Boatman would crash into them with a larger boat, with John Andrew jumping off at the last second before impact.
"NINJA" ATTACKER- Unknown assailant who entered a home in Boulder and sexually assaulted a 14 year old girl just 9 months after JonBenet's murder.- Victim had attended the same dance studio as JonBenet.- Other parallels included the attacker sexually assaulting the victim at home at night with her parents asleep in the house.- It is believed that the attacker entered the home while the family was out and hid inside for 4 to 6 hours before committing the assault.- When the victims mother woke up due to hearing a noise and entered her daughters room, the attacker jumped out of a second story window to escape.- Large age discrepancy between JBR and other victim - statistically a pedophile interested in six year olds would not be particularly interested in a 14 year old (and vice versa), although this is far from universal - for example, Jimmy Saville's victims ranged in age from 8 to 70. RANDY SIMONS- Photographer who had taken many photos of JonBenet and other girls.- Had approached at least one mother about taking nude photos of her daughter.- Behaved strangely following the murder. Was found naked walking down a road and when approached by police immediately said that he didn't kill JonBenet.- Left Colorado and told acquaintances that he was being pursued by "paramilitary types" who were after photographic negatives he possessed.- Was arrested in 2019 for distributing large amounts of CP over a public wi-fi network, was released early due to the covid-19 pandemic. LINDA HOFFMAN-PUGH- Was the Ramsey's former housekeeper. Had keys to the home.- Was at the top of the Ramsey's own suspect list.- Gave handwriting samples and DNA to police.- In a later interview stated that the crime must have been done by someone with knowledge of the home as the wine cellar room was hard to find.
MICHAEL HELGOTH & JOHN STEVEN GIGAX & JOHN KENADY- Michael Helgoth was the owner of a junkyard in Boulder. He had been involved in a minor property dispute with John Ramsey. His junkyard was in the process of being condemned for pollution.- Helgoth owned a stun gun and a pair of booths consistent with an unidentified boot print found at the scene of JBR's murder.- Helgoth committed suicide one day after DA Alex Hunter publicly announced they were narrowing in on a suspect. - There is suspicion that Helgoth's death was a murder staged as a suicide. He was shot in the head through a pillow (can be done to reduce to noise of a gunshot, extremely unusual in a suicide). As well his stun gun, which he normally kept in a locked cabinet, was found beside him.- A documentary insinuates that Helgoth committed the murder with an accomplice, John Steven Gigax, who then killed Helgoth.- Gigax has a conviction for child sex crimes and other violent offences, however, he was later proven to be in Indiana on the night of JonBenet's murder.- John Kenady, another man with a conviction for child sex crimes, is the person who went to the documentary makers accusing Gigax of killing both JonBenet and Helgoth.- Kenady was convicted of trespassing in Helgoth's home, which he says was to preserve evidence.
GARY OLIVIA- Man with a record of child molestation in Oregon. Had once strangled his mother with a telephone cord.- Attended anniversary vigils for JonBenet.- Called a friend a few days after the murder and told him "I hurt a little girl"- Was once arrested while carrying a backpack containing a poem he'd written about JBR and Susannah Chase (another girl murdered in Boulder by a baseball bat roughly 1 year after JBR) and a stun gun.- Had built a shrine to JonBenet.- DNA not a match for unknown DNA at the scene.- Has later claimed to have been a part of a group of people who killed JonBenet.MICHAEL MCELROY AKA ANDY SAVAGE AKA THE PROPHET - Boulder based artist who came to police attention due to his website which featured many references to Barbie including an essay titled "Barbie Doll, The Ultimate Fuck" and pictures of hearts.- Owned a stun gun.- Naked Barbie dolls were left on the Ramsey lawn multiple times in 1997. JonBenet died with a red heart drawn on her hand. - Verified to be in Denver the night of the murder. Provided handwriting and DNA samples to police.
JOHN MARK KARR- Former teacher who made international headlines after Thai authorities arrested him for confessing to the murder of JonBenet.- Initial reports - including one by the Associated Press - stated that Karr had knowledge of the crime scene which was not publicly available. This was quicky retracted and all traces of these reports have been scrubbed from the internet.- Knew Patsy's mother's nickname.- Drew a map of the basement of the Ramsey home from memory, was said to be a perfect match except "flipped" - i.e. rooms on the opposite sides of where they were.- Initially claimed to have intended to kidnap JonBenet for ransom and then accidentally killed her during a sexual assault.- Quickly withdrew the confession and instead claims to have been with her when she died, but was not the person who killed her. Has continued to stick to this second story long after being dismissed as a false confessor.- Noted to live an extravagant lifestyle for a teacher, travelling and working in dozens of countries and driving expensive cars. - Similarities between the ransom note and Karr's writing. - Is now living as a transgender woman under the name Alexis Reich.
JAMES PARTIN- Ohio man arrested in 1998 for distributing CP over the internet.- Son of a high ranking military general.- Considered a suspect in the 1983 disappearance of Beth Miller from Idaho Springs, where he lived at the time.- Had multiple photos of JonBenet in his possession when arrested.MISCELLANEOUS SUSPECTS- Chris Wolf. Turned in by his girlfriend. She claimed that on the night of the murder he was out all night, came home with mud on his clothes, and acted strangely. Had a sweatshirt with S.B.T.C. on it. Cooperated with investigation and gave DNA sample.- Cowboy Boots Intruder. Unknown person who broke into the Ramsey vacation home in Michigan. Left behind a suitcase and pair of cowboy boots. Slept in JonBenet's bed.- The Warrior. Violent Native American who decorated his apartment with hundreds of newspaper clippings regarding JonBenet, insinuated to a friend that he'd killed both JBR and Susannah Chase. DNA not a match for JBR, had strong alibi for Chase murder. - Gary Merriman. Access Graphics Director of Human Resources. Police said they didn't think he'd killed JonBenet but that he might have written the note.- Party People. Large, wild, drug-fueled party held about a block from the Ramsey home on the night of the murder. Supposedly police never checked this out.
POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS TO NORTH FOX ISLAND AND OAKLAND COUNTY CHILD KILLINGS- In July 1976 a child pornography ring was discovered to be operating out of North Fox Island in Lake Michigan, under a front organization named "Brother Paul's Children's Mission."- At the time the head of the Michigan Aeronautics Commission was James Dudley Ramsey, John Ramsey's father.- North Fox Island contained an airstrip, and as such was required by law to receive surprise visits from the Aeronautics Commission, which it never did.- The Ramsey family owned a home in Charlevoix, Michigan, directly across the water from North Fox Island. - Adam Starchild was a child pornographer and financial criminal who was one of the people arrested in connection with the North Fox Island ring. He was confirmed to be in the Boulder area in December 1996.- The Oakland County Child Killings are four unsolved murders of children from Oakland County Michigan. A suspect in that case, Chris Busch, allegedly committed suicide in the 1970s.- Chris Busch was the wealthy son of a General Motors executive. Upon his death a bag of materials connecting him to the North Fox Island ring was found in his possession.- Also in his possession was a drawing of a screaming boy strongly resembling OCCK victim Mark Stebbins.- Despite being ruled a suicide by gunshot, there was evidence of staging. The discovering officer was also later convicted of child molestation.- Jill Robinson, the only OCCK victim who was shot, is believed to have been killed by a Victory SBT shotgun. Note the ransom note was signed Victory! S.B.T.C. Jill Robison and JonBenet were murdered exactly 20 years apart to the day. - Years later Charles Busch, the brother of Chris Busch, was subjected to attempted questioning by authorities in New York. He refused to speak unless himself and his entire extended family were entered into witness protection, strongly indicating that he feared for his life from powerful people.

These materials are illegal to own so I have never personally sought after them, but I was fortunate enough to witness a few videos crafted based on cut up portions of what occurred the night JonBenet was murdered so as to not show any illegal activities but give a general gist of the idea. Of course, I cannot verify this as it was shown to me and not sent to me. That being said, it's real for me at least."
WONDERLAND CLUB RAIDS- The Wonderland Club was an early internet forum for CP. It was heavily encrypted, using software used by the KGB, and members were required to provide unique content in order to gain access. - Wonderland was eventually infiltrated by the FBI. Raids of members began on September 1 1999, the Ramsey grand jury investigation concluded on September 15 1999.
