We have been genetically engineered so that these powers are not available to us but in more recent years these blockages have been removed. My theory is that these powers have been made available to us because society is in such a chaotic state that we will not know how to use these powers and destroy ourselves. I think that could backfire hwoever in ways unforeseen to the powers that be and lead to hope instead.
